    Promotion to Motherhood

    By metropolitanmama | August 14, 2007

For those of you who don’t know, I work from home for the local school district in my community. It’s an amazing district - lots of competent, intelligent, and innovative people who are committed to helping students and families.

I have many “wow, I am so incredibly fortunate to be working with so many brilliant people in such a family-friendly environment” moments. Today was no exception.

All of the principals and superintendents in the district met today for a leadership meeting (a twice/month event). One of the principals is nine months pregnant and is planning to stay at home with her baby after the birth. We celebrated her impending birth by providing her with a gift certificate to a local spa for a massage - and the superintendent gave a little speech.

His speech left me speechless. If you know me personally, you know that I’m a huge fan of the superintendent. But today solidified my admiration. He didn’t simply say “congratulations” or “we wish you well.”

He said, “we’re here to celebrate Heather’s promotion [to motherhood]…”

    Well-said.

Very well said. I wish the world would see it this way. It seems that in this day in age everyone assumes we should have careers and jobs as top priorities and then maybe kids on the side. Being a mom, especially a stay at home mom, often seems to me like it’s considered a step down. What words of wisdom.
