How to Swaddle Your Baby
By metropolitanmama | December 13, 2007
I often wonder what it must be like for a little newborn to enter the world. I’m sure that it must seem terrifying and perhaps cold in the great sea of light outside the womb.
Perhaps that’s why some newborns have bouts of fussiness during the first few months of life. It can be a test of patience for bleary-eyed parents, exhausted and overwhelmed by the 24/7 care required for their new little life.
Fortunately, there are some things that seem to help calm newborns - especially things that mimic the comfort of the womb - like swaddling.
We swaddled our Little Beauty from day one…and it did seem to help her to sleep longer and less fitfully. She was our “little burrito.”
There are many ways that you can swaddle. You can use good, old-fashioned receiving blankets (see video demonstration here). Or you can buy a blanket specifically designed for swaddling to make the process a little bit easier (easier is good when it’s 2 a.m. and you can barely see straight).
Katerina Trani - a clinical social worker, mother of three, and one of the inventors of The Loving Baby Swaddle Blanket - had this to say about the Loving Baby Swaddle Blanket, “it is a blanket with over 3 years in research and design. We have incorporated several safety design issue within the construction of the blanket to address GERD, hip dysplasia, suffocation, chest and stomach restrictions, shoulder and arm placement, and neck support to name a few. It is simple to use, comfortable, cute, and does not come undone.“
The Loving Baby website also gives some tips about why to swaddle and how to swaddle.
WIN IT! One lucky winner will receive a Loving Baby Swaddle Blanket. To enter, simply leave a comment and your e-mail address on this post prior to Saturday, December 15th, at midnight. The winner will be announced and contacted via e-mail on Sunday, December 16th. * Winner must provide a U.S. mailing address.
* UPDATED * The winner is #10 Brooke. Congratulations!

I would love to try the Loving Baby Swaddle Blanket. When my daughter was born, I tried to old fashion way, but I could never get the blanket to stay tight. This would be great!

We were big fans of the Ultimate Swaddling Blanket with our daughter. It would be interesting to try this one out with baby number 2 who will be here soon.
December 13th, 2007 at 2:42 pm
I got pretty good at swaddling our daughter with a receiving blanket, but my husband never quite figured out how to do it tight enough. Maybe a blanket like this is exactly what he needs for the next little one.
December 13th, 2007 at 2:43 pm
What a great idea! Regular receiving blankets are too small for swaddling once they pass the newborn stage.
December 13th, 2007 at 2:59 pm
I had one and loved it. Would love to give it to my friend who is 8 months along!!
December 13th, 2007 at 3:03 pm
