    Children’s Book Spotlight: Someday

    By metropolitanmama | March 25, 2008

Someday (Athenuem Books, 2007), written by Alison McGhee and illustrated by Peter H. Reynolds, is a nostalgic picture book from a mother’s point of view as she watches her baby become a child, then a young woman, and then a mother. The book’s tone is sweet and serious, gently reminding parents that time passes by in the blink of an eye. It is, in many ways, a picture book for adults.

Reynolds’ illustrations are charming and fit well with the tender tone of the text. Even the font - the scribbly, almost-cursive handwriting - reminds the reader that the book is really a heartfelt letter from a mother to her daughter.

    81 Amazon reviewers
give this book a solid 5-star rating and I can see why. It’s sentimental and moving (but, I should add that it might be a little too tragic/frightening for wee ones since the book ends on a rather sad note).

the ending sounds bittersweet. My oldest has been asking about death (her greatgrandma just passed away) and now believe that you die when you are 99

If I don’t win this, then I am going to purchase it. I often imagine what my daughter will be like as she grows older. I am already proud of who she is becoming.

I can see why you dont recommend it for the youngest ones. But I like that it’s a warm hearted mothers story to her kids, and talks about life.

I was just thinking the same thing about “I’ll Love You Forever,” which is one of our favorite books. This looks like a great story, especially for those of us who have moms and daughters. We can see it from both ends! Thanks! gumbi1313 at msn dot com

My goodness. Your description alone made me almost tear up!! This sounds like such a great book that I’d love to share with my daughter. Right along with one of our favorites: God Gave Us You

Sounds like a beautiful book. I would love to have the opportunity to share it with Brea now and as she gets older. This book will be a great investment because the message will last an eternity.

This book looks amazing. My daughter today was just telling me how she was growing up and I said, “I know and I’m not happy about it.” I am interested in looking more at the font of the book. I will probably try to hunt down a look at the inner pages.

I love children’s books that speak as much to the mommy reading it as to the child themselves - this looks like one of those!

This sounds great. I agree with another poster that it sounds like a Mommy version of “I’ll love you forever”. We have that book and I was always sad that I didn’t have something for my little princess’ from me. This would be a great gift to curl up on the couch with my two youngest and read!

      Great giveaway!
