    Flashcard Fun for Everyone

    By Stephanie | July 7, 2008

Almost every day my daughter stands on her tiptoes and points up at our bookcase and says “cards!” She is referring to her box of First Words Look & Say Flashcards by Usborne Books. The box contains 29 sturdy flashcards that feature play-doh-like illustrations with the corresponding word in bold text (Boy, Table, Tree, Dog, etc.).

The words are simple and the illustrations are fun and unique. We play all kinds of “games” with the cards – we line them up on the table, we look for things that are outside/inside/etc., we wave to the little girl in the picture, etc. I stuck these cards in my LUG bag when we recently went on a road trip to California and I’m so glad that I did. They were convenient to carry and such a nice “change” from regular books and toys.

These cards are super fun for the dog days of summer when its too hot to spend much of the day out of doors. The set would also be a GREAT idea for a 1st birthday present. Best of all, if you make your purchase through the links on this post, you’ll be supporting a work-at-home mom named Alison. If you have any questions or if you would like to sign up for an e-newsletter that features great new and old Usborne titles, you can contact her directly at alison@greatfunbooks.com. To read about new reads that are perfect for summer (and summer traveling), check out her corresponding website – Great Fun Books

WIN IT! One winner will receive the First Words Look & Say Flashcards box set ($9.99) from Usborne Books. To enter, leave a comment on this post prior to Monday, July 14 at midnight (don’t forget to follow the rules). * Winner must provide a U.S. mailing address.

*UPDATE* The winner is #110 Marla Bland. Congratulations!

I can just see your cute little peanut asking for those cards! I love it.

I would love to get a set of these to practice with my 18 month old, and my little 6 month old. Any help that they can get while in the car with me, or while we are waiting for the endless lines that seem to be throughout life, it’s a great chance for them. I’d love to get a sign language set to put on the back that I could do the motion to help them with that as well. Wonderful giveaway.

I really like the illustrations, from what I can see in your pictures. So often I don’t like the quality of the pictures on flashcards, or they don’t do a good job of isolating the object they are naming, so these look great!

Usborne really makes such high quality stuff. These cards are no exception! I love the idea of giving them as a 1st birthday present, or even a 2nd birthday present. Something like this can be used for so long in many different ways.
