A Coupon Queen, I Am Not

index r1 c1 300x117 A Coupon Queen, I Am NotConfession time: I rarely use coupons. As in, maybe two coupons per month.

This might surprise you since I am a super saver. I’m not sure why I’ve never become a Coupon Queen. I always hear awe-inspiring stories from readers and friends who save hundreds of dollars on their grocery bill every month. And I always think fleetingly, “I should really look into using more coupons.” And then I don’t.

Here’s why I haven’t made it a priority:

  1. We don’t currently subscribe to the Sunday paper and making an “extra trip” to the grocery store on Sunday to pick up a paper never sounds particularly appealing.
  2. Even when I do buy a Sunday paper, I can’t help but notice that many/most of the coupons are for highly processed foods (Healthy Choice, Pop Tarts, etc.). If there were more coupons for produce, baked goods, and meats, I’d be much more inclined to pursue couponing.
  3. When I do cut coupons, I often forget about them because they end up being smooshed down somewhere in the depths of my wallet. I then “discover” the crinkled coupons post-expiration date with a sigh.

Now, thanks to The Couponizer ($19.95), I can scratch #3 from my excuses list.

oc1 A Coupon Queen, I Am NotIn case you haven’t heard of it, The Couponizer is an impressive coupon organization system that is easy-to-use and highly effective. The system features a brilliant 8″ x 5 1/4″ booklet that allows me to organize my coupons into 18 categories (Baby, Baking & Staples, Beverages, Bread & Bakery, Breakfast, Canned Goods, Condiments, Dairy, Frozen Foods, Health & Medicine, Household Cleaning, Household Maintenance, Meat, Paper & Plastic, Pasta, Personal Hygiene, Pet, and Snacks). Plus, there are handy pockets for me to store entertainment and restaurant coupons. Best of all, there’s a pocket specifically for coupons that are to be used for the current shopping trip (no more fumbling around for the right coupons in the check-out line…). There’s even a handy shopping list pad, a pair of mini scissors, and a vinyl carrying bag.

The Couponizer is a mom-invented product and only costs $19.95.

With the help of The Couponizer, maybe I can be a Coupon Queen, after all. Now all I have to do is subscribe to the Sunday paper…

YOUR TURN: Do you “coupon”? Why or why not? If you are an active couponer, what tips would you share with “the rest of us”?

Themed Weekend: What’s For Dinner?

wfd2 Themed Weekend: Whats For Dinner? That question is on my mind a lot.

Every single night of the week, in fact.

I try my best to plan meals out approximately one week in advance and usually I succeed. But it’s hard coming up with creative, fresh menu ideas that are nutritious, quick, AND delicious…seven days a week. Even our “family favorites” get a little boring after awhile…no matter how tasty they are.

So I thought we could help each other out.

That’s what this weekend is all about – sharing recipes, divulging favorite menu ideas, and discussing meal-prep and planning. Of course, there will be meal-themed product reviews and giveaways as well.

Stay tuned…

Let’s kick off the weekend with a question: Who does most of the cooking in your house?

My husband helps out around the kitchen (cleaning, prepping, etc.), but I’m really the cook of the house. His recipe repertoire is rather skimpy. He can make some awesome scrambled eggs and he’s King of the BBQ Grill, but he’s just not the chef type.

For example, tonight I made the Beef Fajitas. But he’s not just watching TV in the other room while I cook in an apron with my hair perfectly coifed. Au contraire: The TV is off. My hair is pulled back. And he is scrubbing the table and loading the dishwasher as we speak. That, my friend, is modern America for you.

Thankful on Thursday

Today, I’m thankful that…

  • I’m 33 weeks pregnant. Becoming pregnant and staying pregnant isn’t easy for everyone so I’m grateful for this little miracle that is thriving inside of me (and moving around a lot to prove it!).
  • I’m 33 weeks pregnant. Which means I only have 7 weeks left.
  • I have an Utterly Yours Pregnancy Pillow. I’m still sleeping quite well, in part because of this little gem of a pillow.
  • My marvelous mother-in-law is able to come over to play with my Little Beauty while I work.
  • I work for such a family-friendly employer (I work from home – approximately 10 hours per week – doing PR work for the local school district).
  • There was a new episode of Fringe on Tuesday and I was able to watch it with my husband last night at midnight. Anyone else a fan? [Warning: Fringe is a bit on the gruesome side and is definitely not a family-friendly show. That said, the character development is quite good and the plot is enticing...]
  • I have a little chef to cook me up eggs on her cardboard stove.

Our Discipline Philosophy…what’s yours?

Our “philosophy” about discipline is evolving as our daughter grows.

the shirt of many colors Our Discipline Philosophy...whats yours? In 2.5 seconds flat (oh, was that years…?), she went from a bright-eyed and button-nosed infant to an active and independent toddler who is fearless, fun-loving, and full of spunk. She has a mind of her own and she doesn’t hesitate to communicate her needs and wants. She truly is a leader in the making. She is tenacious yet tender-hearted, assertive yet compassionate. She’s going places and we want to help her in that journey, while providing the boundaries that she so desperately needs from us.

My husband and I talk about parenting often and here are a few “principles” that we believe in. We actually have never spelled them out in an acronym like this. But here goes…

  1. BE the person you want your child to become. Drs. Les and Leslie Parrott are big proponents of this…and so are we. In their book, The Parent You Want to Be, they state that, “It is more important who you ARE than what you DO.” We couldn’t agree more. If we are patient, our daughter will be patient. If we say “please” and “thank you,” she will mimic those phrases. If we are gracious and forgiving, she will follow in our footsteps. We truly believe that working on our own character and considering our own actions/words is far more important than implementing any specific discipline strategies.
  2. ASSESS the situation. Take time to consider possible “causes” behind “bad behavior.” Again, I think parents should first point the finger back at themselves before reprimanding their child unnecessarily. It always makes me sad when I see parents scolding their child when it is obvious that the child is hungry, overtired, or bored due to preventable situations. For example, is it really okay to get angry when YOU kept your child up past their bedtime or gave them a sugary treat in place of lunch? I certainly don’t think we should excuse bad behavior, but I always strive to put things in perspective and to look at myself first.
  3. SET appropriate boundaries and state them clearly. Age-appropriate boundaries are crucial. If there are crayons all over the floor and your 1-year-old just won’t stop putting them in his mouth, don’t discipline him – just take the crayons away, for goodness sake! If you do set a boundary, be clear about your expectations and what will will happen if your child disobeys. For example, I might say to my 2-year-old, “Please hold my hand when we cross the street.” If my daughter runs out in the road or lets go of my hand, I might say, “It’s dangerous to cross the street without holding my hand. Please hold my hand. This is your warning. If you let go of my hand again, then X (you will have to go to time-out, we will have to go inside, etc.).”
  4. KEEP anger in check. Anger doesn’t help. Period. Screaming, shouting, getting red-faced, cursing, hitting things, hitting people. If you feel yourself losing control, step away. Don’t risk losing your relationship with your child because your harshness gets in the way. Gentleness should be present – even smack-dab in the middle of a disciplinary situation.

You might notice that I didn’t list any “tactics” (spanking, time-outs, grounding, etc.). That’s because we think they are less important than examining the heart of the matter. Again – who we ARE is more important than what we DO. Actions speak louder than words…or spankings or lectures. Our kids watch us and then they do what we do. It’s almost as simple as that.

You might also notice that the acronym is BASK, which seems appropriate. To “bask,” means (1) to lie exposed to warmth or light, or (2) to revel in and make the most of something. I think that’s a nice way to view parenting. Positively. With a bent toward grace and forgiveness and compassion…and light.

YOUR TURN: What’s your “discipline philosophy”?

P.S. I shared this movie clip some time ago, but – in case you missed it – here’s a very powerful “visual” that demonstrates the fact that “Children See. Children Do” (produced by NAPCAN and Child Friendly Australia).
