Dress to work out…and work out, you will

My blonde-haired sister-in-law Danielle pulled up in our driveway in her Nissan Xterra. Climbing out of the car, I noticed her stylish oversized sunglasses and perfectly coiffed ponytail. She was dressed in running clothes – striped shorts, a white t-shirt layered over a tank top, and silver running shoes. Ever the height of fashion, she looked like a celebrity just on her way to or from a workout at some posh club. She pulled her adorable, blue-eyed baby out of the car and smiled my way.

I smiled back, “Did you just come from working out?

She laughed, a warm and glittery laugh with a tinge of nervousness in it, “No. I just thought I’d wear this in case I get a chance to exercise.”

The sheer brilliance of that statement has stuck with me over the past few months.

Sometimes just getting dressed for exercising seems so exhausting…so, if you’re “ready to run,” you’re much more likely to do it.

I think I might start dressing in sportswear too. And not just ugly, torn yoga pants with a saggy bottom, mind you. I mean real workout clothes. Cute workout clothes. Something I would feel great about running around in the neighborhood in.

These stretchy, supple pants have an extra-comfortable waistband and a flattering fit. They gently snug your hips and thighs, and then flare out at the bottom of the leg. Available in black or shadow, these pants will match with just about anything.

If you’re still exercising in plain, old cotton t-shirts, you should consider buying a breathable, moisture-wicking tee. They really are less sweaty and icky. This shirt comes with an “invisible” pocket for your house key, your debit card, or a few extra dollars. I would like this shirt even better if it were available in a bright, vibrant orange or a striking navy…and the tummy could be a bit more roomy for postpartum mamas. But, overall, it’s a great option. V-necks are the best.

If you’re a busty babe, you will likely appreciate Enell’s tee – designed specifically for curvy women. The silky, lightweight material has just a little extra room where you need it most, yet it glides over your body effortlessly. The shirt is only available in black, but I don’t mind that. Black is so basic, so classic, and…great for a “minimizing” effect.

Bye-Bye to “The Bounce”

One of the things that held me back from running for the longest time was…”the bounce.”

That was back in the days when I tried to wear the same sports bras as my B-cupped counterparts. I’d put on one of those stretchy, over-the-head, $20 bras from Target…and get moving.

The only problem was that, when I moved, my breasts moved too. A LOT. That’s not good for a number of reasons:

  1. It’s distracting for people who happen to be driving by.
  2. It’s distracting for you.
  3. It’s uncomfortable and can be painful.
  4. It’s not good for your breast tissue.

Then, I realized that all sports bras are not created equal. I also realized – much to my dismay – that I would have to pay a small fortune for a good sports bra. Finally, I realized that it was worth it.

16 149x150 Bye Bye to The BounceLong hailed by Oprah, the ENELL Sports Bra ($64) is a uniquely patented bra specifically designed for the well-endowed woman (32-52; C-DDD). It features a snap-up front and silky, yet sturdy, material. Once you get the hooks all fastened, the bra is quite snug…so snug, in fact, that you’ll probably wonder at first if the bra is too small. But then you’ll start running and notice that your breasts are compressed quite nicely with minimal bouncing. What a relief! What a miracle!

The ENELL was one of Oprah’s “Favorite Things” and has been highlighted in O Magazine on numerous occasions. Oprah is sometimes criticized for featuring items that are a tad bit ridiculous or ostentatious, but this bra is not one of them. I highly recommend it to well-endowed women.

One thing is certain: if you have a D cup or larger, an ordinary sports bra just won’t do.

Review: Wave Rider 12 by Mizuno

41yorx c0fl aa280 Review: Wave Rider 12 by MizunoI don’t spend top dollar on very many apparel items.

Shoes are an exception.

Especially running shoes.

I need running shoes with ample support, plenty of cushioning, and lightweight breathability since I wear them several times a week. The Wave Riders by Mizuno fit that description. The pillowy bottom absorbs shock and the mesh molds around my foot gracefully. Best of all, their snazzy style is commendable. The silver/virtual red stands out…and they’re equally well-suited for 5Ks or jaunts around the neighborhood.

I Never Considered Myself To Be A Runner…

I always tell beginning runners: Train your brain first. It’s much more important than your heart or legs.” – Amby Burfoot

The hardest part about exercising is not the beating of my heart, the sore muscles, the pounding of the pavement as it reverberates my bones.

On the contrary, the hardest part is getting up, getting started, getting going. Once my feet hit the sidewalk, I can run. I can fly. I can strive.

It is the choosing – the deciding – that is most difficult.

I used to think that I wasn’t meant to be a runner. I am not tall or lanky. I don’t have that lean composure, that elegant stride, that controlled breathing – characteristics that are so common among runners.

img 0530 I Never Considered Myself To Be A Runner...I am actually rather curvy, a Marilyn Monroe type figure. And my stride is a little funny. And I run pretty slowly, one foot in front of the other, methodically.

I took up running in 2006, not because it is an innate talent, but because my heath is extremely important to me…and running is one form of exercise that doesn’t allow for excuses.

Running only requires a pair of tennis shoes, a good sports bra, a sturdy jogging stroller (if you want to include your baby), a pair of legs, and a beating heart. No babysitters! No gym fees! No pricey equipment! No gas/driving! I just have to lace up my shoes and head out the door.

I started running with my firstborn baby in 2006 and, since then, I’ve completed two 5Ks (see above left: that’s me after my first 5K in December 2007).

5Ks are fun and inspiring and, strangely, addicting. There is something so thrilling about crossing the finish line and about watching the other people out there – and they’re not all just Olympic gods and goddesses. The people on the track are ordinary people. Young. Old. Short. Tall. Thin. Stocky. 5Kers are diverse, to be sure.

I never would have pictured myself as a runner, as a racer. But now – now, I proudly say that I am. I run. I breathe. I soar. My heart is strong. My body is strong. I am strong.

And that feeling is truly one-of-a-kind.

Themed Weekend: Back In Shape After Baby

3171673047 42453be01f m Themed Weekend: Back In Shape After BabyIt’s been almost 10 weeks since my baby girl was born.

I’m feeling recovered, ready to run again.

But my muscles are flimsy and weak.

Thus far, my post-baby workouts have consisted of going on walks about every other day with my family and doing 75-100 crunches a few times a week.

I have also gone running by myself twice. Short, pitiful runs at a snail’s pace…but runs nevertheless.

Pretty soon, though, I need to “ramp up” my workout. To tone up. To trim up. To be strong and healthy. For myself. For my girls. For the future.

Here’s my “fitness plan” for summer/fall 2009:

  • Do 100 crunches at least 3 X a week.
  • Do 32 reps with my 5 lb. weights to tone my biceps at least 3X a week.
  • Take advantage of cooler nights (whenever they bless us with their presence) for family walks or jogs.
  • Get a second single jogging stroller or a double jogging stroller so that running can be a family affair again.
  • Train for a 5K.

This weekend is all about getting and staying in shape – whether you had a baby six weeks ago, six months ago, or sixteen years ago. Stay tuned for fitness-related articles, product reviews, and giveaways.

YOUR TURN: What is your current fitness routine? What is your “plan” for the upcoming months? How do you “beat the heat” in the summertime?
