Are you “down” with DownEast Basics?

My “rule” for buying new clothes is that I generally stick to a $20 or under price tag for each piece of clothing. I make exceptions, however, for jeans, bras, coats, and the occasional piece that I just *know* I’ll wear everywhere.

Because I am a deal-seeking kind of girl, I appreciate boutiques like DownEast Basics.

The cool thing about DownEast Basics is that the most expensive item that the brand carries is $44.99. Most of the tops, bottoms, dresses, and skirts actually run in the $15-$30 range. And, if you are a bargainista like me, you’ll appreciate the sale page with discounts up to 70% off (If you’re pregnant, be sure to check out the maternity tanks and tees on-sale for $5.00).

DownEast Basics recently sent me two items from their fall line to review – the Closer Look Cardigan ($24.99) and the Out and About Skirt ($33.99):

Here’s a close-up of the skirt:

And me in the sweater (Thanks to my cosmetologist sister Kathryn for doing my make-up for all these shots. She just started her first job at a salon and clearly has a knack for it.):

The Closer Look Cardigan is soft, easy to wear in hot or cool weather, and has that slouchy look that is all the rage this season. The sweater extends beyond the hips and has two mini front pockets.

The Out and About Skirt, on the other hand, is excellent for petite types like me because the A-line is flattering and the length is just right. The corduroy is lightweight, yet perfect for fall – and the tiers are just plain fun. And I already told you I’m all about the orange this fall. As such, I’m loving the pumpkin-inspired hue of this skirt.

Paging Dr. Stephanie

scrubs and beyond iguana med 1 Paging Dr. StephanieWhen I was a little girl, I often played “Doctor” with my little sisters. I set up my clinic in the bathroom and carefully examined my patients. My favorite diagnosis was a broken arm because I could then ever-so-carefully create a cast out of water and toilet paper – wrapping it gently ’round and ’round the injured limb.

As the years passed from elementary to middle to high school, I still considered going the medical route. I certainly had the qualities necessary – I loved school and could easily see myself in academia for a long stretch. I also have a natural ability to memorize things. I’ll often look at a word/paragraph once and be able to recall it instantly.

Somewhere between childhood and young adulthood, I was enticed away from science by literature and poetry. The English language and all of its marvels captivated me. I went on to study English at the undergraduate level, then went to seminary very briefly, and then eventually landed on getting a masters in school counseling. It’s funny how life unravels – a series of choices based on the places we are, the people we meet, and the doors that we walk through.

scrubs and beyond iguana med 2 Paging Dr. StephanieSomeday I still might like to get my PhD. Maybe. I wouldn’t go the medical route though (too many years, too much time away from my family), but perhaps I could pursue a doctorate in Family Studies or Communications. That said, it’s really not on my radar right now. I’m already “studying” my family and I’m learning more about communication right now than I ever could in a classroom.

Sometimes people talk about having “mommy brain” or feeling like their mental capacity is draining from at-home motherhood, but I don’t buy it. I am more innovative, bright, and courageous than I ever was. I am constantly reading, studying, writing, collaborating, and creating. My kids inspire me to be the best version of myself. I am more qualified than ever to do research, to speak at conferences, to write books, and to serve as a consultant.

I am choosing to be an at-home mother and I firmly believe that my education and my credentials are not wasted in this line of work. On the contrary, my intellect is sharpened daily as I teach, inspire, and play with my two daughters.

P.S. I’m wearing scrubs in these pictures not because I’m a doctor and not because it’s Halloween (although it would make a great costume…), but because one of my readers gave me the best idea awhile back. She said she wears scrubs around the house because they are as comfortable as PJs, but you don’t have to run for cover if a neighbor or the UPS guy happens to stop by. I thought that it was such a brilliant idea that I decided to steal it.

logo01 150x52 Paging Dr. StephanieSo whether you just want to wear a pair around the house or you really do work in the medical industry (as a doctor, nurse, physician’s assistant, dentist, or dental assistant), I encourage you to check out Scrubs & Beyond - an online destination for medical scrubs and uniforms. The company offers 25 different brands, including Baby Phat Scrubs, Disney Scrubs, Grey’s Anatomy Scrubs, and IguanaMed Scrubs. Scrubs & Beyond also has an online outlet, home of $8.99 specials and other great clearance items.

Shade Clothing: perfect for any kind of weather

My 3-year-old and I both enjoy cloudy, rainy days. She calls them “shady days.”

Inevitably, we will don our boots and head out into the weather (provided it’s not pouring). The baby will be on my back and my 3-year-old will run up ahead, overjoyed by the sparkling droplets and the billowing clouds. It’s refreshing, really…and good for my soul.

I could go for another “shady day.” I can’t complain a bit though. Today, it was in the 60s and sunny – just about perfect, if you ask me.

I took the opportunity to put on a few new tops that Shade Clothing sent me for review.

First, the 3/4 Sleeve V-Neck Cardigan (on-sale for $27.99):

Clearly, I’m all about the oranges lately. I love that deep pumpkin color – so perfect for fall! I wasn’t sure if this cut would “work” on my body type, but – now that I see the pictures – I like it.

Up next, the V-Neck Placket Top (also on-sale for $27.99):

I am always a fan of navy blue – it’s such a classic, true color. You really can’t go wrong with it. The military pockets, zip-up front, and banded bottom make this top immediately stand out from the pack. I do wish that the zipper went down just a tad bit further so that I could nurse in this top without having to lift from that bottom, but that is a minor complaint. Overall, it’s a great casual piece.

P.S. You’ve gotta watch the Shade Clothing staff dancing to “Thriller” at a recent Halloween party. It’s awesome and I so want to dance along. In fact, next time that I’m in a big group, I may play the song and invite everyone to dance along. Friends, this is your advance notice.

What Nursing Mothers Wear: Motherwear

mw logo color1 300x59 What Nursing Mothers Wear: MotherwearThese days my wardrobe primarily revolves around nursing.

I need tops that provide quick, easy access – for at home and on-the-go.

Surprisingly, those kind of tops are pretty hard to find – especially if you want to be modest about the whole thing.

Enter Motherwear, a company that specializes in “tops, dresses, sleepwear, and swimwear that have hidden nursing openings so you can breastfeed your baby anytime, anywhere.”

I actually tried a Motherwear top several months ago and was disappointed by the comfort/style, but I recently decided to give the company a second shot…and I’m so glad that I did!!! I was sent this casual, chic, perfect-for-fall Sporty V-Neck Top ($35):

AND…I absolutely love it.

In fact, if you know me in real life, you’ll likely see me wearing this all over the place through the fall and winter. It’s comfortable, soft, fitted-but-not-too-fitted, and it’s a cinch to nurse in. Plus, don’t you just adore that gorgeous pumpkin color? I also particularly appreciate that the top is two distinct pieces so I can wear that bottom white layer with other tops too.

OTHER THINGS I think you might like to know about Motherwear:

  • Motherwear has a clearance page that has fantastic deals (right now, you can get Swim Skirts for $5.99!)
  • Need a Christmas gift idea for a nursing mama? Buy a gift certificate to Motherwear. I know that I’d be thrilled to receive one.
  • The Motherwear Breastfeeding Blog is one of the best “corporate blogs” that I have come across. The posts provide informative, entertaining, and up-to-the-minute opinions and information on breastfeeding-related topics.

YOUR TURN: Check out Motherwear’s site and tell me…what item catches your eye?

Themed Weekend: Fall Fashion

I am a very picky shopper. VERY picky.

In fact, if I go shopping and call my husband afterwards, he’ll ask me, “Did you buy anything?” And he’ll actually be disappointed if I say “no!”

When it comes to my clothes, I am quite persnickety – which basically means I have a few outfits that I wear over and over and over again.

I want my clothes to be:

  • well-fitting
  • classic
  • modern
  • unique
  • flattering
  • modest
  • vogue
  • machine-washable
  • affordable

All at the same time.

Is that too much to ask?

anoname jeans and el naturalista clogs Themed Weekend: Fall FashionMy favorite store to shop at is probably Nordstrom Rack (but, unfortunately, there isn’t one in my city). I also appreciate Banana Republic, NY & Company, and Chip & Pepper. And I love discovering little-known brands, small boutiques, vintage shops, and new designers.

Here are my current favorite articles of clothing and their corresponding brand:

I’m picky because I know that appearances matter. I wish they didn’t (oh, how I wish they didn’t!), but they do. The reality is that people DO judge your competence and character by the tag on your shirt or the shine of your shoes. As such, I strive to buy “key pieces” that make me feel fabulous that I can wear again and again.

kokopax carrier october 2009 Themed Weekend: Fall FashionOh, and I have a “secret weapon” for those times when I have *nothing* in my closet: I wear my baby (and a smile). And you know what? Even if I’m wearing sweats, she never fails to win the hearts of everyone we encounter. She glances up, from beneath her long lashes – and the flowers bloom. She makes the whole world beautiful.

Stay tuned for fashion-related articles, product reviews, and plenty of giveaways (You DO want new clothes and shoes, right?). That’s what this weekend is all about.
