SLY Awards: Knit Picks

5420153 144x150 SLY Awards: Knit PicksKristen knits.

This is what she said about it, “I am REALLY into knitting right now. I guess it’s a bit trendy these days. I am by no means good at it, but I pretend. It’s an expensive hobby, tho, so I am learning to salvage thrift store sweaters to use for just a fraction of the price…

I am delighted to be gifting her with a $20 gift card to Knit Picks, a premier online knitting shop that is all about offering “quality products at a reasonable price.”

If you don’t knit, you may reconsider after seeing these adorable projects (all available for free or purchase from KnitPicks.com — click on each picture to view the pattern):

  1. Gabriela says:

I love KnitPicks! I use them regularly as a resource when I need help on a pattern I’m working on. I’ve also received some of their yarn as a gift and it is very nice yarn to work with.

Thanks for the giveaway and Congratulations to Kristen!

  2. Becca says:

What a fun place. I taught myself to knit hats and scarves on a loom this winter, and quickly became obsessed with yarn. I never knew there were so many different textures, etc. I kept trying to think of kids to make hats for, just so I could try out a new yarn.

  3. What a wonderful giveaway! Kristen and I are in the process of knitting “sister-project” blankets. It’s my first “big” knitting project and she’s my inspiration (she made me a gorgeous lace-knit scarf for Christmas)! This is the perfect gift for her :)

  4. What a great gift! I have been a crocheter for many years, but have recently tried my hand at knitting. LIke Kristen, I am a beginner and find it hard to learn quickly as it is truly an expensive hobby!

  5. “I gave Kristen a compliment!” am I really supposed to comment twice if I know her…?

  6. Sharon says:

Crochet is my yarn playground. I’ve bought books on knitting but just can’t get the hang of it. I usually get my yarns at local craft stores; I’m afraid I would go broke if I ever stepped into a real yarn store.
I love the look of knitted goods, the stitching always seems so perfect, especially compared to my sometimes irregular-sized stitches.

  7. Sara says:

I taught myself to knit a couple of years ago but have never moved beyond novice. This year I learned to crochet so I could make my girls some of those cute hats. I have yet to master the hat but it is fun. Looking at the KnitPicks site makes me want to try my hand at knitting again. I also love Kristen’s idea of reusing thrift store sweaters. I’ve wanted to reuse ts sweaters for sewing projects (haven’t yet) but never thought of the actual yarn, genius!

  8. Abbi says:

Knitting is lots of fun and relaxing. I have been blessed so far to have to buy very little yarn as I try to make projects that use a lot of scraps and people have given me yarn. Shopping for special yarn with a gift card would be very fun however!

  9. Jessica says:

I have also taught myself to knit fairly recently and I am still learning a lot. I really want to try making myself a sweater, but I’m afraid I’ll mess it up!

  10. Carol says:

I would love to win, I’m a beginner but learning.

  11. debp says:

This would be perfect for my son. I taught him to knit about a year and a half ago. He had a stroke at birth so fine motor skills are hard for him. This winter he has been recouperating from 2 unsuccessful surgeries to try to remove tumors from his leg. He has been knitting toys for his nephews’ fourth birthday. My son was always interested in nice yarns, but I didn’t want to spend the money until I knew he had gotten the skill down. He would be so excited to pick out his own yarn from their beautiful selections.
    thanks

I can’t wait! I visited their website last night… so many amazing things to choose from! I think I might get some nice yarn and make baby #2 a sweater. Or I might get a yarn winder to wind the thrift store sweater yarn I find. Or… :)
    Thanks, Stephanie!

  13. Tiffany says:

would love to win this for the baby on the way. thanks for the chance once again

  14. Lisa says:

I have always wanted to learn how to knit. This place looks great!

  15. jennifer says:

What cute goodies! I have always wanted to be able to knit and make cute things like this, just don’t have the patience! Thank God for stores like this!

  16. Kathleen says:

They have such great patterns. I’d love to knit the Pickets Baby Blanket pattern for my best friend whose due in the fall. Great selection of yarns too!

  17. Ashleigh says:

How I wish I could knit! There are some adorable things on there. I might have to take a few patterns and show them to my mother in law, who actually DOES knit.

  18. Sharon Harmon says:

The birdie in the nest is incredibly cute and created perfectly!

  19. Michele says:

I love the way that knitted projects look – I am totally a beginner though {I’ve only knitted three hats, and they have lots of “character”}. Seeing posts like this make me want to try to learn more and build up my knitting knowledge!

  20. Amanda S. says:

I’m not a knitter, but I do crochet and Knit Picks has great yarn!

  21. erin says:

I like knitting, but I am not very good or quick with it. Example – I have been working on the same Christmas stocking for 3 years & am only about 1/3 of the way done. Ha!

  22. Amy M says:

I took a knitting class but put away my scarf project when I found my son unraveling it one day. That was quite a while ago, but I hope to pick it back up some day and finish that green wool scarf. Knit Picks looks like a great place to go for starting on my next project!

  23. Aura says:

I browsed their patterns and love so many things. Unfortunately I’m not very handy nor do I have any time but I wish I would have a chance to knit for my kids. Maybe one day for my grandkids. Either way this would make a wonderful gift for a great friend who has taken up knitting. When you open up SLY awards I would definitely nominate her. She’s profoundly deaf but that has never stopped her from anything in life. She’s a nurse, a wife, a mother and an unbelievable friend. She even offered to watch my 2 year old twins for 2 weeks in the summer so that I can go away with my husband- talk about amazing!!

  24. Erika says:

I was very impressed with the website. So many cute things. The fruit, animals, little hats for toddles the yarn selection is great, I like that she has tutorials and inexpensive pattern downloads.

  25. Janelle says:

I’m really enjoying knitting and would love this. Knitting is so relaxing!

  26. Vanessa says:

While I am not a knitter, I have a sister who is and would absolutely love going here. This gift would be passed on to her if I won.

And, I gave Kristen a genuine compliment.

  27. elizabeth says:

I have twins on the way so this would be perfect! I could make them each a little blanket with their names on them!

  28. Well, you knew that when you said “knitting” I’d be here in a heartbeat!

  29. Brie says:

Knitting is one of those hobbies that I’ve always looked at and thought, “Hmmm…I’d like to give that a try.” I’ve always been afraid to go and purchase all the necessary things, but this would provide a chance for me to try it on for size.

  30. Dawn says:

I love this new portion of your blog…so special and kind of you! I am a new knitter myself but the little projects I have done I have loved making. :)

  31. Maureen says:

    How wonderful.
I have to make sure I knit for a bit each day. It is a way for me to relax and just unwind. This would be a great help in purchasing wonderful yarns.

  32. Jennifer says:

I don’t knit but I love to crochet. Could always use more yarn! I see they have a great assortment of yarn there.

  33. Mindy says:

What a great giveaway! I just recently started knitting, and am becoming addicted. :) I started with the intent of making my newborn son some knitted wool longies to go over his cloth diapers. Little did I know how much I would actually enjoy the knitting. Now, I’m not only making the wool pants, but also hats and more! I love it. ;) I think I need to invest in some interchangeable circulars, and knitpick’s seem to have great reviews!

  34. Kait says:

I have been wanting to start knitting very much lately and my friend is going to teach me in the near future. I’m a little unsure about buying the supplies, and this giftcard will really help me get started! Thanks so much for the great giveaway!

  35. Monique says:

Knitting is one of those things I would love to learn. Thanks for the chance.
    mogrill@comcast.net

  36. Vanessa says:

Oops, I was suppose to leave a second comment stating that I left a genuine comment for Kristen too.

  37. Claire says:

Ahh, I love Knit Picks yarn… it’s a lot higher quality than yarn you can buy at craft stores for the same price. :)

  38. Rae Higgins says:

KnitPics is awesome!! I’ve been wanting the beautiful wooden double points. And the yarn is so reasonable! Thanks!

    rjwhiggins@aol.com

  39. Erica says:

I would be in the beginner category, but I’d love to learn how to knit a scarf! For some strange reason I picked up a pattern at Michael’s for a matching hat and scarf, but I don’t know how to knit, nor do I have the materials!

  40. Madeline says:

I love to knit. I’m not terribly great at it, but I love it just the same. That pointed hat is calling my name.

  41. Sarah R says:

I love KnitPicks! I have their interchangeable circular set. And they have a colorful bamboo needle collection that is so beautiful I can’t imagine ever knitting with it. Great patterns too. Very cool!

  42. Melissa says:

Great giveaway. I recently started crocheting and have a few projects under my belt, and would love to win this!!

  43. LauraC says:

This looks like really nice yarn!!!

  44. AshleyD says:

My sisters and I love knitting so I would love to win!

  45. Wehaf says:

I love to crochet hats and baby booties for my nieces and nephews, so it would be great to get some comfy cotton yarns for future family babies.

  46. Madeline says:

I would love to learn how to knit; I think it would be good for helping me destress in the evenings while watching tv. I just get so intimidated trying to read big instruction books on how to knit. Plus, my attempt at learning how to crochet was a complete disaster. But, I think I’ll give knitting a try! :)

    Thanks!

  47. Marina says:

I d like to learn to knit really really well. Like my Mom. She just made these awesome matching jackets and hats for my little girls. Maybe one day I can make these for my grandkids..

  48. Rachel C says:

My grandmother taught me how to knit when I was younger. She’s lefthanded and I’m righthanded, so it was kind of hard for her to teach me, and now I knit sort of backwards…but I think that my “wrong” way of knitting is special; it will always remind me of my Mom-Mom!

  49. Annette E says:

If I won this, I’d like to buy the Mr. Roboto kit.

  50. Kathy S says:

I love the KnitPicks website (great free patterns,) and ordered some great books and yarns from them a while back. Very good customer service.
I taught myself to knit when I was only 17 (wow..that was 42 years ago!) Always enjoyed knitting for my kids, and now my granddaughters. Back when I started, there was no one my age who knitted, so by the time I was in college, I was “the weird girl who knitted in the student union lobby!” Love it…it’s a great lifelong hobby. I’d love to win this. Thanks!
ps: Your girls are getting so big…and so cute!

  51. taylor says:

Their Yarn ball winder would be handy to have when I knit.I never knew anyone made this kind of item so now I know

  52. Carolsue says:

They have so many really user-friendly tutorials. I could sure have used that when I started to learn knitting and crocheting.

  57. Bee says:

I am about to order from Knitpicks for the first time ever and I have timed this sooo badly, as I will need to order before the lovely new spring yarns come out, especially sorry to miss the lace! I really fancy the Stroll tonal, but I guess it isn’t to be.
Also I am really struggling to make up my mind between some of the beautiful colourways (Wicked Witch, Mermaid, Make Believe) so if anyone has advice on how to decide…
Thanks for your lovely blog too, I am finding it not just interesting, but really useful too!
    Bee

  58. Alli says:

I love to knit! I think it would be fun to pick a book on crocheting, such as their book on crocheting finger puppets!
