Somebody Loves You, Sarah Bessey

Congratulations to Sarah Bessey…this week’s recipient of a SLY Award here on Metropolitan Mama.

sly awards sarah bessey Somebody Loves You, Sarah BesseyIt’s very rare that I stumble across a blog and subscribe RIGHT AWAY because I get positively sucked in.

That happened with Sarah’s blog, however.

I found Emerging Mummy several months ago and was immediately mesmerized by Sarah’s eloquence, her sincerity, and her way of living life with such a delightful splash. It is obvious that she knows LOVE…and that she is spreading it to those in her circle.

For starters, she is a gentle and thoughtful parent to her two tinies – Anne and Joseph. She doesn’t just do things without thinking – she has reasons (and I so love that).

Sarah also works as the Director of Marketing and Communications for Mercy Ministries, a non-profit residential program that serves a diverse population of young women from various socio-economic backgrounds, ages 19-28. The program is free and voluntary…open to young women who face a combination of life-controlling issues such as eating disorders, self-harm, drug and alcohol addictions, physical and sexual abuse, and unplanned pregnancy.

I first heard about this ministry almost 12 years ago and have always loved and supported it. Now, to be a part of opening the first Canadian home, well, it’s a God-thing, for sure. I am so honoured and blessed to be here. We’re going to be opening on May 29th, welcoming the women of Canada in to restore hope and transform lives.”

Won’t you join with me as I celebrate Sarah and shower her with two surprise gifts hand-selected just for her? Oh, and YOU will have a chance to win both products too.

If you know Sarah in real life or if you read her blog [Emerging Mummy], please leave a compliment here for her. Let’s give her something to smile about today!

where to find the brightest minds & best leaders in your community {check the playground}

crossed arms where to find the brightest minds & best leaders in your community {check the playground}I am a stay-at-home mom.

Wait. Don’t let those stereotypes sink in. The image is appearing in your mind: a woman in jeans and a ponytail, singing the ABCs, making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and changing diapers. Oh, wait – that IS me. But – that’s not ALL of me. Not even close.

The reality is that I love speaking at conferences, traveling to new places, meeting new people, and volunteering in my community.

I like sipping wine, talking politics and good books, and collaborating with businesses. I have a Masters degree, a killer resume, and a million ideas.

I’d like to be a part of Greater Tucson Leadership and the local chamber of commerce. I’d like to sit on the board for the Volunteer Center of Southern Arizona. I’d like to join the National Speakers Association. I’d like to work/consult for a Fortune 500. I’d like to get my Ph.D.

BUT – I also don’t like leaving my kids. I genuinely love being with them – every day, all day.

happy girl where to find the brightest minds & best leaders in your community {check the playground}The trouble with leadership organizations and events in our culture is that they tend to block families out.

They want me to come to a “mixer” at 7pm every Tuesday – decked out in heels, with business cards in my pocket – while someone else puts my baby to bed.

They want me to go on trips – flying solo and staying in swanky hotels…hotels that have water slides that my girls would L-O-V-E.

They want me to attend charity balls with invitations that say, “No Children, Please.”

telling a story where to find the brightest minds & best leaders in your community {check the playground}As such, I opt out. And so does my husband. Because as much as we care about our city/state/nation, we care about our kids MORE.

I wonder what can be done about this dilemma.  Some of the brightest minds, strongest communicators, and most innovative leaders that I know are highly involved parents that are choosing NOT to participate in business/political groups.

I propose a new model, a new paradigm. Perhaps babies could be included…invited…to meetings sometimes. Perhaps universities could leverage technology and offer more post-graduate degrees online. Perhaps business mixers could be family affairs sometimes (or be offered at more convenient times, at the very least). Perhaps companies could offer more flextime, part-time, and at-home opportunities. Perhaps, as a culture, we could begin to view a baby’s laugh or a child’s presence as something more than a distraction.

hand resting on chin small where to find the brightest minds & best leaders in your community {check the playground}The question on my mind is: How can I contribute to the future of my city, state, and nation without compromising my family? I don’t have the answer…

yet.

Are you a member or officer in any business, community, or political groups? Why or why not?

the “sameness” blues

halloween books bats at the library 11 ss 150x123 the sameness bluesYesterday, I picked a book out of our library basket and read it to my 3-year-old.

It was Bats at the Library by Brian Lies. (Thanks for the recommendation, Donita…we love it!).

As I was reading it, a line from the book jumped out at me. I read it out loud twice. And then I wrote it down in my notebook (I carry notebooks with me everywhere).

All this sameness leaves us blue and makes us ache for something new.

Newness is what I’ve been craving lately. New foods. New places. New faces. If somebody offered me a condo in a new city, I’d probably take it. I’d have to take my three favorite people though (they are PART of me).

My 3-year-old has the same “itch,” I think. Today, she asked to make “a brand new craft – something we’ve never done before.” When we went on a walk, she said, “Can we go a new way? – somewhere we’ve never gone before.

I think tomorrow we’ll make a NEW kind of cookies. I’ll play a NEW song on the radio. I’ll think up a brand NEW craft to do. Just because. Because it’s spring. Because we can.

Do you like trying new things or do you prefer routines?

ALSO: please tell me your new favorite song or craft idea. I’m looking for inspiration…

baby #3

tim and the girls in the backyard baby #3Tim & I talk about having another baby – every day. We’re almost ready to say “go”…but not quite.

There are factors to consider. Upcoming [international] trips. A big project/secret that we’re working on like crazy. And then there’s the fact that I’m not sure I’m ready to stop nursing my 13-month-old yet. I know I could keep nursing through pregnancy (and beyond), but…if the past is any indication, I’ll probably be throwing up and losing weight for the ENTIRE first trimester. Not exactly ideal conditions for breastfeeding.

So we wait (a little longer – but not too much longer…).

We do KNOW, however, that we want to have another. From deep down in our hearts. For so many reasons.

sisters in the grass baby #3Lately, we’ve been spending time with bigger families and it confirms our desire. We can’t help but sense their happiness, their fulfillment. It seems nice to have so much noise in a house – so much laughter, so much love.

If it’s already THIS good, it can only get better…

WHAT ABOUT YOU? How did you decide how many kids to have? How did you decide the spacing between your kids?

Working at home is…

Working at home is…

working from home Working at home is... work at home mom Working at home is...

  • staying up really, really, REALLY late.
  • having a to-do list that is a mile long and an ocean deep.
  • returning e-mails instead of watching TV.
  • having laundry on the couch, unfolded.
  • doodles and sketches and ideas on notebooks all over the house.
  • dreaming about building my business, about being a better person.
  • BEING HERE with my kids – every day (all day).
  • not always easy.
  • totally worth it.

Do you work from home? If not, have you considered it?

ALSO – Do you have any questions for me about working-from-home? I may answer yours in an upcoming post.

Does anyone else have a little bit of spring fever?

I sit down to work and then…I look out my window.

I see the green grass. I hear the lovely pitter-patter of spring showers.

Every spare moment, I seek new adventures with my family. Hiking. Running. Picking Wildflowers. Playing at the Park. Dilly-dallying in the backyard.

Anything but my e-mail inbox (forgive me if you’re waiting for a response). Anything but my little white laptop screen (so uninspiring compared to the potential for April Adventures).

I’m not normally like this, but I’m telling you: spring fever is real.
