bullet points (of time)

  • TODAY, we are almost completely out of groceries. We ate the last piece of fruit in our house this morning for breakfast, along with the last pieces of our last loaf of bread (yes, the ends too)..
  • TOMORROW, we are meeting with a lady who spent a few years RV’ing full-time with her husband. We are also going to put our house up for rent, publish more listings on Craigslist, respond to e-mails, ETC. [That "etc." deserves to be in caps].
  • right side bullet points (of time)LAST NIGHT (like every night), Tim & I talked about the risks involved in the Give Every Day venture…the what-ifs, the don’t-forget-to-do-that’s, and the what-about-???.
  • THIS MORNING (like every morning), we felt a deep, mysterious peace that seemed to whisper from somewhere far away, “Everything’s going to be okay.”

It may be a little quiet here for a few days as we dive in deep to prepare for the giving tour (tentative plan is to leave in January!).

Do you grocery shop on a particular day of the week (or do you go spontaneously when your cupboards get bare)? Do you shop at the same store every week (or do you vary your route)?

* Also – We are looking for new chapter book recommendations. Have any?

The Outdoor Family: (the end)

greta boots by stride rite The Outdoor Family: (the end)Thanks so much for being a part of this outdoor-themed giveaway event. I read every single comment & e-mail.

I’m curious: Do you like it when I do occasional series like this? I keep going back and forth about it.

On the one hand, I like introducing you to new products and it is so gratifying to send e-mails at the conclusion of the contests that say, “You WON!

father daughter hiking The Outdoor Family: (the end)On the other hand, I prefer the lyrical every day posts…the creative writing…the give-and-take that happens on posts revolving around meaningful content.

You tell me. Do you like giveaway events from time-to-time? If so, what “themes” would you be most interested in for the future?

P.S. Several of you have asked about my 4-year-old’s boots (above; right). They are made by Stride Rite – and they’re fantastic! She gets compliments on them every time we go out…and the zipper makes it super easy for her to put them on and take them off herself. I think they’ll be her go-to pair of shoes for autumn and winter.

The Outdoor Family: ERGObaby Performance Carrier

ergo performance in action The Outdoor Family: ERGObaby Performance CarrierTim & I like to hike. When we began having babies, we had two options: (1) Stop hiking and wait until all of our kids were old enough to hike on their own (that might be a long time coming…) or (2) Carry the little ones. We decided on the latter.

For shorter hikes, our 4-year-old can hold her own. She’s quite an able hiker for being so young. For longer hikes, Tim carries her part way in our Kelty carrier.

When our baby was younger, I carried her in the ERGO on my chest. Now that she’s a toddler, I prefer to carry her on my back (The only downside of carrying her on my back is that it’s harder to get her situated without help from another adult. Once she’s in, though, she’s content.). She also likes to get out and do a little hiking herself when we are on flatter surfaces.

hiking with a toddler on my back The Outdoor Family: ERGObaby Performance CarrierERGO recently sent me their newest Performance Carrier ($120) in Spring Green to review. I was giddy when it arrived. You see, this is the “ERGO for outdoor people.” It has all of the same great features as the original ERGO, but it’s lighter in weight, has a more durable exterior, and is lined with mesh for better breath-ability.

I haven’t used it on any long hikes yet, but it’s proven itself to be awesome on shorter hikes.

ergo performance back carry The Outdoor Family: ERGObaby Performance CarrierSo. I bet you want to ask me, “If you had to choose between the organic carrier and the performance carrier, which would you choose?” That’s a tough one because they are VERY similar. I almost couldn’t tell the difference. If you intend to use the carrier at least semi-regularly in outdoor pursuits, I would say to get the performance.

Do you have any babywearing questions for me? Feel free to ask.

The Outdoor Family: Hi-Tec boots

daddy daughter hike The Outdoor Family: Hi Tec bootsWe were driving down a mountainside last month and both girls were asleep in their car seats. I looked over at Tim and a sudden feeling of admiration came over me…and kinship over shared joys. I said, “I’m so glad you love the outdoors. My life could have been very different if I had married someone who didn’t share that passion.” His green eyes smiled at me in agreement.

Tim is actually much more outdoorsy than I am – a fact that I am grateful for. Although I have been backpacking, rock climbing, rappelling, white water rafting, and ocean kayaking…I am still not as sure or as steady on my feet as he is. He bounds up and down boulders with ease. I go more slowly, watching my feet. He runs uphill on trails without stopping to catch his breath. My lungs can’t compete. He can hike for miles with a heavy load on his back. Carrying a baby is plenty for me.

I think part of my trepidation is linked to the fact that I wasn’t out in the wild as much as a child. Tim remarked to me on a recent hike, with amusement in his voice, that our girls were going to pass me up pretty soon. And I think he may be right. Our 4-year-old can scramble across rough terrain without flinching. I am so proud (and I HOPE they do surpass me…in every way).

hi tec rainier event boots The Outdoor Family: Hi Tec bootsSee those boots that Tim is wearing? They’re the Rainier eVent WPi boots by Hi-Tec. Built for backpacking, they are sturdily constructed and offer excellent ankle support. He can walk through water, mud, and rocks – without worry about water seeping in. Even though they protect against anything getting IN, they’re still lightweight and breathable enough to be supremely comfortable.

Hi-Tec also sent me the V-Lite Snowflake Chukka 200i boots. You are going to love them. Ready?

Cute, right? I’m totally wearing them right now as I sit on the coach, typing away on my laptop at midnight. And I’m not just wearing them for the picture either. Despite it being hot here in Southern AZ, my feet still get cold at night (strange, but true).

These waterproof beauties are going to be perfect for tromping through the leaves, snow, and ice this winter. Cold weather, here I come!

The Outdoor Family: Bass Pro Shops

tim on a horse The Outdoor Family: Bass Pro ShopsI’ll let you in on a little secret about Tim. Back in the day, he used to be in 4-H. He had a special horse named Charlie. He told me all about it on our second or third date.

I’ll also let you in on a little secret about me. In high school, I almost always listened to the country music radio station in my car – often with the windows down, my fingers tapping the steering wheel. When I was 17, Tim bought a bottle of Strawberry Wine and we had a picnic (all because of that song).

I guess you could say we both have a tiny bit of country in us – even to this day.

Bass Pro Shops is an outdoor retailer that appeals to people who love and work the earth – ranchers, farmers, hunters, hikers, and fishers.

Here are a few fun country-inspired pieces that would make great gifts for your spouse, your kids, or yourself:

redhead rancher work boots The Outdoor Family: Bass Pro ShopsHe doesn’t have to be a bonafide cowboy to appreciate these all-leather RedHead Rancher Waterproof Work Boots (see left – $99.99). Waterproof, weatherproof, and winsome…these boots can carry any guy from the barn to the business office. Tim says they’re mighty comfortable and I say they’re mighty good-lookin’.

littlest sharpshooter in the west The Outdoor Family: Bass Pro Shops

Our little sharpshooter is a serious threat because she’s so cute she could cause a heart attack. Here she is wearing the Embellished Straw Cowboy Hat for Girls (see right – $12.95).

matte cuff bracelet The Outdoor Family: Bass Pro ShopsHow about this Matte Cuff Bracelet (see left – $4.94) to add a little southwestern flair to a western woman’s wardrobe? Fashioned with glass beads, it’s a pretty piece that is bound to be noticed.

BPS has plenty of other gifts and products to peruse – at great price points. If there’s a store near you, you should stop in and check it out for yourself (bring the kids – the displays are fun).

Do you listen to country music? If so, what are a few of your favorite songs – past and present?

The Outdoor Family: Weber Q Portable Gas Grill by Lowe’s

weber q lp 120 The Outdoor Family: Weber Q Portable Gas Grill by LowesWith our house on the market and our heads in planning mode for our upcoming giving tour ’round the country, meal planning has been the last thing on our minds.

I took the girls to the grocery store yesterday and couldn’t think of a single meal to make (really). I spent $20 – milk, butter, bread, and fruit. We had homemade fruit smoothies and fresh tortillas last night; french toast the night before. Tonight? Um. Something on the grill?

Tim is awesome when it’s 5:30 and we’re meal-less. He will often grill up chicken, fish, or veggies at the last minute – and the results are rarely disappointing. On special occasions, we grill up a platter of babyback ribs (and the girls love it).

picture 5 The Outdoor Family: Weber Q Portable Gas Grill by LowesIf you’re short on space (perhaps you live in a condo, apartment, or duplex) or you want a grill to take camping, I recommend the Weber Q 120 LP Gas Grill ($169; available at Lowe’s). It’s compact, heavy-duty, and a cinch to use. The fold out wings on either side are great for holding waiting plates and tongs.
