7 Best Places to Take Kids in Tucson

silly on suitcases 7 Best Places to Take Kids in TucsonHow kid-friendly is your city? I give my hometown of Tucson, AZ a 5 (out of ten).

Clean, spacious parks with safe playground equipment are few and far between. Restaurants that offer deals for kids are not especially easy to find. Downtown Tucson is anything but a bustling, cheerful place for children.

That said, there are definitely diamonds in the rough here.

Since we’ll be driving out of Tucson in about a week and a half, I thought I’d share our favorite spots:

1. Sabino Canyon – 7Falls Put on your tennis shoes, slather on sunscreen, wear a hat [trust me on the hat], pack a lunch, and bring plenty of water. This 4-8 mile hike (depending on where you start) is worth your while. The best part? There is a waterfall at the end with plenty of water for swimming and splashing.

2. Mt. Lemmon - Certainly, a stay in Tucson isn’t complete without a visit up ol’ Lem. In about 1 hour, you’ll enjoy a 20-degree temperature drop (refreshing in the summer). The little town of Summerhaven is a great place to stop for lunch and a warm cookie.

3. Brandi Fenton Memorial Park – Brandi Fenton offers the traditional amenities of a nice park – green grass to run around in and several playground options (that are safe for the youngest of visitors). What really sets it apart, however, is the free splashpark. Designed with kids 6 and under in mind, the small concrete area has spraying fountains and buckets that pour from overhead.

4. Udall Park – Grab a soccer ball, a few baseball mitts, or a picnic basket…and enjoy this expansive park, equipped with athletic fields. Our favorite part? The winding outdoor track. My 4-year-old and I like going on “runs” around it.

5. Little Anthony’s Diner – The food at this 50′s parlor isn’t anything to speak of, but the environment is colorful and casual. We always order the same thing – a medium pizza and a mint chocolate chip milkshake (split 3 ways).

6. Claim Jumper Restaurant – This chain is a little on the expensive side, but it offers a great atmosphere for kids – fast seating, good food, and enough noise to drown out YOUR kids’ noise (ahem). Our favorite thing is that you can request a “baby plate” for your little ones (3 and under?)…and the waiter will bring out a plate of applesauce, cheese sticks, and turkey strips.

7. Cienega Creek – This secluded place of beauty is ideal for a picnic or a leisurely day hike. The overhanging trees and bubbling creek offers an oasis from the blistering sunshine.

Most travel guides list the Reid Park Zoo as a must-see in Tucson, but I’m not a huge fan (it’s small and I always get so disheartened when I see the massive polar bear sitting forlornly in 90-degree temperatures).

Surprisingly, we’ve never been to the Tucson Children’s Museum nor have we taken our kids to the Pima Air & Space Museum (anyone want to share their review?).

Also – you’ll notice that most of my recommendations are slanted toward the east side of Tucson. I’d love to hear from my NW/Marana friends.

How would you rate your city on the “kid-friendliness” spectrum? If you live in Tucson, what would you add to my list?

Tim said I should title this post “random”

4 year old artist Tim said I should title this post random

Today, I fell out of the RV. I was about to walk down the steps. I tripped – with my 21-month-old in my arms. I landed on my right ankle and my left wrist, holding my baby up and away from me. Remarkably, she didn’t even have a scratch. (I, however, just took ibuprofen). (Do you pronounce it with the “u” or not? I’m curious).

Later, I thought about how all future presidential candidates should be required to star in a reality TV show prior to the election. It is so hard to get behind all of the political clutter to actually see what each candidate stands for.

4 year old artwork Tim said I should title this post randomSomeday I might want to run for a political office (but probably not president). I like the idea of impacting the local community and helping to shape the future of our country.

I wonder what my girls will be, who they will be, and what causes will inspire their hearts. Our 4-year-old holds steady in her ambition to be a nurse. She also is quite the artist. And she saves lives…

Tim was filming the girls at bathtime tonight because they were splashing like crazy and laughing. Our littlest slipped (she was sitting down; she just sort of slid forward) and took a dive for the water. Her big sister caught her and helped her straighten up. She then stated confidently, “I saved her life. I actually saved her life.” (And we caught it all on camera). It was pretty much the cutest thing ever.

Have you ever run for a political office? Would you want to? What do your kids want to be when they grow up?

a play-by-play of a recent fight with Tim

considering her next move a play by play of a recent fight with TimYesterday, Tim and I got in a fight about laundry. About 75% of our fights revolve around cleaning (for real).

I was folding heaps of clothing, when Tim came over to “help.” He immediately started unhanging all of his clothes (that I had just hung!) and telling me that they were hung “incorrectly.”

To Tim, there is “only 1 way to clean.” That’s a direct quote. He thinks there is a certain system for folding laundry, hanging clothes, loading the dishwasher, mopping the floor, even scrubbing the toilets…and heaven help the person who deviates (that’s usually me). ;)

I’m a neat person, but it’s more like this: If I look around and see clean floors, clutter-free countertops, and all the clothes in drawers, I am content. He looks and says, “My black socks don’t go in the left corner of this drawer!” Uh-huh.

I may or may not have huffed, “You are so inflexible!” and stomped out the RV with our 1-year-old on my hip after yesterday’s incident. Embarrassingly, I also bonked her head into the wall in my hurry to get out.

We have days like that – when the symmetry is off, when the Grumposaurus Rex comes to get us. (Does he ever come to your house?).

You may sometimes read my blog and wonder how it’s possible that we are so happy. It may even seem that we are pretending, that this whole thing is a big farce.

But we’re not pretending. We ARE ridiculously happy. It’s just perspective.

considering her next move1 a play by play of a recent fight with TimIf you were to see the overarching themes of my life (if you could hear the music of the soundtrack of me…), you would undoubtedly see beauty and wonder, love and magic. You would hear a glorious symphony, with notes of laughter and magnificence. Of course, there would also be sad tunes and stomping marches…but mostly, you’d hear a comforting melody.

When I came back in the RV twenty minutes later, Tim had put away all of HIS clothes – and left my clothes and the girls’ clothes sprawled out on the bed. “I didn’t want to mess up your system,” he remarked, matter-of-factly. “Unlike you, I don’t HAVE a system,” I retorted snootily (now with a half-smile on my face), “I’m just satisfied when the clothes are put away.

Later that night, our 4-year-old turned on the country music station and all four of us danced in the main room to Alison Krauss. As I sang along into a pretend microphone with animated gestures, he caught me in an embrace and said, “I’m sorry; I love you.”

The orchestra played and the back-up singers chorused, “You’re so lucky to have a life like this, a life like this...” Except that music wasn’t playing on the radio. It was playing in my heart.

What do you and your spouse fight about the most?
