Tips: Breastfeeding in Public

6 Tips: Breastfeeding in PublicI remember the first few weeks of breastfeeding. I felt like I was perpetually feeding my little blue-eyed beauty. It was exhausting – and extremely trying to go anywhere in public.

If we went out, I found myself immediately scoping out the locale for a secluded corner or room to escape to at the baby’s beck-and-call…and here are the best places that I discovered:

Dressing Rooms: If you go to the mall, to any clothing store, or to Target, dressing rooms are great havens for nursing moms. Almost all dressing room attendants will allow you to feed your baby in one of the rooms – and the majority will let you wheel your stroller along with you into the family dressing room.

Front Seat of the Car: Oftentimes, the best option for nursing baby was simply to bow out gracefully and sit in the front seat of the car with the air-conditioner (or heater, depending on your climate) running.

Nursing Lounges: Many malls and shopping centers now offer private nursing lounges and large family areas with comfortable couches. Do ask about these kind of amenities. If they do offer them, be a frequent shopper and show your appreciation. If they don’t offer them, ask anyway – the “powers that be” might change their mind if enough people ask. [Kudos to Babies-R-Us for leading the way in the nursing lounge revolution!]

Of course, another option is to buy a nursing cover like the ones that Bebe Au Lait sells (pictured). They are incredibly stylish and look like an excellent option. (P.S. If you have one, post your review here!)

Product Review: Lansinoh Ultra-Soft Breast Pads

ultrasoft detail Product Review: Lansinoh Ultra Soft Breast PadsThese disposable breast pads come in a box of 36. They have an extra-soft center that cushions tender nipples during the first few weeks of breastfeeding. I tried regular pads by Lansinoh and the ultra-soft version were considerably more comfortable (although pricier too). If you need a quick pain-relief option for cracked and bleeding nipples, apply a generous dab of Lansinoh cream directly on a Lansinoh ultra-soft breast pad.

These pads were a must-have item for me for the first few (painful) weeks of breastfeeding. I plan to purchase a box or two prior to my next labor & delivery to ensure they are on-hand and ready when the time comes.

Product Review: Lily Padz

index 01 Product Review: Lily PadzLily Padz“the only completely non-absorbent nursing pad that conforms to you and not your bra”

I went out and purchased a pair of Lily Padz around week four or five of nursing. I was looking for a pad that was smooth and bulk-free – one that would allow me to wear normal shirts again without two big circles of material bulging out in an unsightly fashion…

PROS
* Lily Padz are lightweight and “skinny” – they adhere to your skin and they succeed in making you look like you’re not wearing a pad at all.

CONS
* Lily Padz adhere to your skin because they have one “sticky” side. The “stick” remains even after lightly washing the pads each day. Personally, I didn’t like the sticky feeling – it didn’t seem right to smush the nipple flat and then to peel it off at the end of the day.
* Lily Pads last for a limited amount of time (the website says they are good for approximately 2 months) – and then you have to purchase a new set.

OVERALL
3.5 Stars. It may just me, but I don’t like the sticky feeling. I’d rather put up with the washable cotton pads.

NOTE
Lily Padz can be purchased at Motherhood Maternity, the baby center store, and many private retailers. [Not available at Target or Babies-R-Us]

As a first time mom, I had heard rumors about sore nipples and other uncomforts associated with breastfeeding and the rumers turned out to be very true indeed. Thus, I was grateful to a savvy mommy friend who bought me Lansinoh Breast Cream.

Essentially, Lansinoh is an “ultra-pure, medical grade lanolin” with “no preservatives or additives of any kind.” Thus, you don’t have to wash it off or remove it prior to breastfeeding.

To use? Simply apply a bit of cream directly on to your nipples after nursing. Another method of application is to place a gob directly on your nursing pad before applying.

  2. Lansinoh Ultra-Soft Disposable Nursing pads – buy at least two boxes (the ultra-soft ones really are better)
  3. 6+ Washable nursing pads
  4. 2-4 Comfortable nursing bras without underwire – get sized about 2-4 weeks prior to your due date
  5. Stretchy, nonclingy tops or nursing camisoles – for easy access
  6. Heating pad - to help with engorgement and other aches & pains
