the fall of 11

give-every-day-family

It is the fall of 2011. I am 29 and our family has just spent the last year in an RV, traveling the country to give to others. Every morning, I wake up and blink, half-uncertain where we are. Sometimes in a Walmart parking lot; sometimes at a campground. Squished in between two tiny girls (a preschooler and a toddler), I wake up to take a fast shower before the warm water runs out. We pile into the truck and go places to serve. The girls hold our hands at veteran's hospitals, food banks, … [Read more...]

A Reader Asks :: Eating On-The-Road

Tim at his usual evening post - washing dishes

Sarah asked, "Have your eating/meal planning habits changed much now that you are living on the road?" Yes. A bit. We still eat in more than we eat out. We still prefer simple, nutritious meals - not made with cans or boxes. We still eat fruit like nobody's business. That being said, we don't always have the availability of high-quality grocery stores, the luxury of time, or the convenience of a large kitchen working area. Plus, we don't have a dishwasher (which makes clean-up … [Read more...]

Home Sweet RV

choosing-an-rv

When we originally decided to travel the country for a year an RV, we had a choice to make: In the end, we decided on a 36foot 2001 Cameo by Carriage 5th wheel. It's relatively spacious, has a pretty decent amount of counter space in the kitchen, PLUS it has a washer & dryer [cue the soundtrack for "Hallelujah"!]. While I wouldn't exactly say it feels like "home," it's definitely doable for our family of four. We paid $13,750 for our 5th wheel - a steal (Note that this is our … [Read more...]

we’ve grown accustomed to good-byes

stephanie-and-colleen

We meet wonderful people everywhere - state by state. The girls find friends to dress-up with, to play rough-and-tumble with, and to scream extra loud with.   Tim & I meet people to play Catch Phrase with after the kids are in bed, to go running with, to have crazy adventures in NYC with, and to pray with around campfires.   And then, in a blink - we're waving again. * Big shout-out to Mike & Colleen, Mick & Eileen, Jay & Kristen, Jay & Sara, Dirk & … [Read more...]

oh, me of little faith

walnut-leathr-couches

Faith is one of those things you don't realize you lack until you're forced to have it. Last year, we had a house with a yard in suburbia, two vehicles (three if you count Tim's dirt bike), a modest but comfortable income, and medical and dental insurance. We shopped at Target and Trader Joe's. I even had my own craft closet (I seriously miss that): Now? We're traveling in under 400squarefeet - without a dishwasher, an icemaker, a garbage disposal, a steady income, or insurance. … [Read more...]

official book count in our RV

pink-book-bin

We have one pink bin for children's books in our RV. I counted today and it has 72 books in it (which is far too few). I'm not sure how many we had prior to our RV life, but I would venture to say that we had at least 1000. Even then, we went to the library once a week. Now, we have a tiny percentage of those books AND we don't have library cards. Killing. Me. We still read books daily (but we're getting bored with our sparse selection). I have "Madeline" memorized … [Read more...]

official toy count in our RV

toy-bin

We have 1 toy bin in our RV. It often also doubles as a doll bed: We have a doctor's kit. A play telephone. A real harmonica. A set of Ukranian stacking dolls. And two games - Letter Bingo and the Give Kids The World Village edition of Candy Land. That's all. Under 20 toys. Everything fits in one rectangular bin and we keep it in a drawer. Our experience on-the-road is teaching us what we (partly) already knew - that most toys can't hold a candle to … [Read more...]

here we are in Woodbine, Georgia

crooked-river-pier

We're kickin' it in Woodbine, Georgia (bet you've never heard of it) for a whole week - maybe more. The owners of this campground are young and from Australia. They have 4 kids and are super friendly - and the rates are among the most reasonable we've come upon. We walk down to the Crooked River at least a few times every day (and try not to have heart attacks as the girls walk precariously toward the edge of the pier). I'm glad we're going to stay put here. We desperately need a little … [Read more...]
