It’s The Most Wonderful Time of the Day

bed june 2009 Its The Most Wonderful Time of the DayBedtime.

In a parent’s dictionary, the words “bedtime” and “peace” would probably be synonymous.

The late afternoon is a blur of activity for us – making and eating dinner, going on a family walk, bathtime, push-ups and sit-ups by the bath, pajamas, brushing teeth, brushing hair, nursing the baby.

By 8:00 or 8:30 – 9:00 at the latest – the girls are both asleep on most nights. My husband and I sigh contentedly and soak up the silence.

Then, we settle into our nightly routine, which generally consists of working on projects and business ideas in a frenzy (there’s something oddly comforting and relaxing about that…), talking about anything and everything, eating a late night snack, and – on a few rare occasions – watching one of the two TV shows that we watch (LOST and Fringe).

We finally – happily, sleepily, with a million thoughts rolling around our restless and creative minds – crawl into our bed at around 1 a.m.

I’m actually quite picky about what I sleep in. It has to be comfortable (and I have high standards for comfort when it comes to loungewear). The material has to be “just so” – soft and lightweight. And, it has to provide easy nursing access – so easy that I don’t have to deal with bunched up material or lots of fabric.

Right now, I alternate between two pajama sets and, ironically, they are both by the same brand: Majamas.

On any given night, you’ll likely find me in either my Majamas Pajannaman PJ’s ($63 – see my previous review of these pajamas):

06 9002 2t 91x150 Its The Most Wonderful Time of the Day

Or my Majamas Lace Sleep Set ($82):

05 1161 3t 75x150 Its The Most Wonderful Time of the Day

Pretty, don’t you think? But, I promise they’re not solely pretty. They’re pretty comfy too. I might sometimes even wear them past the noon hour, but that information is strictly confidential.

Made with a unique combination of 92% polyester and 6% spandex, the material is positively sultry. It glides right over my frame and is perfectly flattering for a mama because it shows off my shape, but DOESN’T “cling.” There’s even extra room for your tummy so either of these sets would also make for a perfect “coming home outfit” after baby’s birth.

Nursing or not, brand new mama or not…you will LOVE these pajamas.

picture 12 Its The Most Wonderful Time of the DayWant to buy either of the above sets? Consider purchasing them from Better Mommy Fashions, a mom-owned online boutique that “specializes in high-quality and fashionable nursing clothes.” Owned and operated by Ruby, a stay-at-home mom with an almost-9-month-old little girl, the shop features items that she has hand-selected to help new mamas feel their very best. As a former international model, she knows fashion. As a nursing mama, she knows practicality. Shop with confidence, knowing you’re supporting another mom – AND knowing that you can return any items that don’t fit for a full refund within 30 days (now, that’s customer service…a few big name brands could do well to learn from Miss Ruby…ahem, Motherhood Maternity).

Snikiddy prides itself on making snacks that are: “Simple. Wholesome. Real.

And I might add “delicious” to that tagline.

I’m not a pro at reading food labels, but these snacks do appear to be healthier and more “natural” than other similar snack items (If you’re a nutritionist and you want to weigh in, please do!). Best of all, they really are “kid-friendly” and fun to eat, not to mention that they can be eaten one-handed (a plus for moms with small babies!).

Check out all 7 of their scrumptious flavors:

Sleep, My Little Baby Bird

I know that co-sleeping isn’t for everyone. Some people prefer to sleep in solitude and silence without the squeaks and squirms of a warm baby beside them.

But I’m exactly the opposite.

sleeping baby 5 weeks Sleep, My Little Baby Bird I sleep so much better with my baby by my side, feeling the gentle up-and-down rhythm of her breaths, knowing that I can protect her from anything and everything. I love looking at her in the dim lighting, watching her sleepy smiles and expressions as she dreams about something that is apparently rather wonderfully funny. I like to watch her little eyebrows dance up and down, to notice when she starts rooting – before she cries. In blissful slumber, I pull her to my breast and we both settle into sleep. It seems so natural, so gentle, so perfectly right.

It may sound crazy, but I feel fully rested in the morning yet I also feel like I was awake – watching over her – the whole night. I feel as if we were breathing in unison. In my sleep, I comfort her and feed her and put my hand lightly on her chest to feel the rise-and-fall of her breaths. I was asleep, yet I was awake – protecting her.

For our family and for this baby, cosleeping works best. I can’t imagine it any other way.

I am not so naive, however, to say that everyone should sleep with their babies. There are, in fact, some situations where parents should not sleep with their babies. But – for many families – cosleeping is the optimal sleeping arrangement.

Dream Dinners: A Busy Mama’s Dream-Come-True

Tonight I pulled already-prepped calzones out of my refrigerator for dinner. I put them on a baking pan, set a timer, and let the savory smells of cheese, pepperoni, olives, and ricotta fill our house. No stress. No fuss. No hassle.

picture 11 150x54 Dream Dinners: A Busy Mamas Dream Come TrueThanks to Dream Dinners, a meal-prep place that “provides everything you need to assemble delicious dinners for your family to store in the freezer and serve in the weeks ahead.”

I went in to the store on a lazy Saturday afternoon in early March (one week before I had my baby), spent one hour prepping meals, and left with 6 dinners in a cooler. And these were healthy dinners with plenty of fresh ingredients: Sonoma Grill Steaks, Yancey Pork Roast, Chicken Marsala, Build Your Own Calzones, Garlic Balsamic Marinated Steaks, and Tuscan Turkey Medallions with Garlic Vegetables.

me at dream dinners Dream Dinners: A Busy Mamas Dream Come TrueThe experience at the store itself was exceptionally pleasant. The owners were kind, the countertops were immaculate, the ingredients were fresh, and the whole process was organized and easy. I simply moved from station to station in a Dream Dinners apron and followed simple “recipe cards” – adding the already-chopped onions, the red wine, the grated cheese, etc. During the sessions, the owners brought out one meal from the current month’s menu and one meal from next month’s menu for us to sample, along with the store’s famous homemade lemonade.

Best of all, I went home with 6 meals that I didn’t have to think about or grocery shop for. I just pulled my meal of choice out of the freezer, followed the simple directions on the attached label, and put a scrumptious meal on the table!

The menu changes every month and accommodates all different kinds of palates – whether your family loves pasta, poultry, steak, casseroles, or comfort foods. I’m already eyeing the Firehouse Three Cheese Pasta with Meatballs from the April menu and the Balsamic Blackberry Chicken from the May menu.

You can choose to make 3-serving or 6-serving meals…and I didn’t think the prices were half-bad. The cost comes down to between $3-6/serving – which is much cheaper than your typical restaurant fare and comparable to meals that you cook for yourself at home. If you factor in the time that you save (you don’t have to make a grocery list, drive to the grocery store, chop the garlic, etc.), it actually might just be a smokin’ deal.

It’s important to note that a “serving” doesn’t necessarily mean a “person.” Each meal is different, but if you have a family of big-eaters, teens, or adults, the 6-serving dishes probably won’t be enough on their own (you’ll need plenty of side dishes).

IN SUM: Will I return to Dream Dinners? YES! Despite the fact that the store is 35 minutes away from my house. It was totally worth it!

Want to join me? Well, you can’t technically join me unless you drive to Arizona. But you can find a store near you and experience the dream-come-true-experience of having dinners ready at 5 o’clock. There are 163 locations in 32 states so hopefully you’ll find one in your neighborhood.

DISCOUNT CODE: When you go online and make your appointment, you can get 10% off by entering this code: 66METROMDD (10% off first time orders of 36 servings or more; limited to one per family and new customers only.  May not be combined with any other discount offer.  Guests go to dreamdinners.com (Menus and Sessions page) to start the process.  The coupon code is entered on the payment page to receive the discount). The code expires May 31st so set up your session today!

Still not convinced?

  • Watch the Dream Dinners experience video to see exactly how it works.
  • Or order the Menu Sampler, “an abbreviated menu that gives people a chance to try a little of everything before committing to a larger order.” Prices for the sampler vary a little store to store, but most start at $75.

WIN IT! One winner will receive a $75 gift voucher to a Dream Dinners (be sure to check to make sure that there is one near you before you enter). What to Put in Goody Bags for Birthday Party Guests

As a little girl, I remember that a birthday party just wasn’t complete without a little party bag to give out to each guest. The goody bags weren’t necessarily extravagant, but they were fun to put together and to pass out at the end of the party to say “thank you” for coming. My friends would eagerly open their baggies to reveal toys, candies, and other knick-knacks.

As a parent, I like the idea of favors for guests, but my thoughts about the contents of the bags has changed. I’m not a big fan of baggies with cheap candies, little trinkets (erasers, plastic rings, etc.), and assembly line toys from the party favor aisle. Instead, I’d prefer if the favors were more creative – healthier – and more practical.

Looking for ideas for filling goody bags for your next party?

Try:

Or consider giving just one “bigger-ticket” item:

These clips are absolutely gorgeous and each clip is handmade by the owner of the company (a mom) to ensure high-quality. There are numerous designs to choose from and most of the clips (or pairs of clips) retail for $4-5.

Or don’t give favors at all.

As I was doing “research” for this piece, I was surprised to find that many parents have rather strong feelings about party bags…and apparently there can be quite a bit of pressure to give them out. I actually like the idea of favors, but I also don’t think they’re necessary. If you don’t like it, skip it.

YOUR TURN: How do you feel about “goody bags”? Do you love ‘em or hate ‘em? What creative ideas do you have for filling them?

And her princess gown was washed again and again and still looked beautiful…The End

photo 2 And her princess gown was washed again and again and still looked beautiful...The EndOnce Upon A Time…there was a children’s boutique in San Antonio that made a little girl very happy.

  • The boutique? Sugarplum Dreams.
  • The little girl? My 2-year-old daughter.
  • The scene? Two exquisitely wrapped gifts with a princess costume, a matching cloak, and a box of shortbread cookies inside.

Sugarplum Dreams is a family company (owned and operated by a mom of four) that aspires to provide a magical and first-rate experience to their customers – both online and in-store. And they succeed at that ambition.

Their selection of baby/children’s products is notable (everything from toys and clothes to furniture and books), but what is even more remarkable is the fact that you’ll feel like a prized and elite customer every time you shop at SD. You can expect excellent service if you call the 888-line. Your questions will be answered with grace and warmth.

There are many items at Sugarplum Dreams that are appropriate for birthday gifts, but today I’m happy to be spotlighting their dress-up collection, which features beautiful AND machine-washable princess costumes for 2-9-year-olds. Little girls are sure to ooh and aah at these elegantly detailed gowns (that can also double as costumes for Oct. 31). Snow White? Cinderella? A Medieval Princess? Take your pick – and watch her little face light up.

What Your Baby Should Wear for the Photo Shoot (no need to get rattled about it…)

picture 21 150x136 What Your Baby Should Wear for the Photo Shoot (no need to get rattled about it...)In my last post, I explained that simple, bright-colored clothing is often the best choice for photo shoots involving babies and children.

Little ones don’t need bells and whistles, lace or buttons, brand names or busy patterns. Their gummy smiles and glittering eyes and baby soft skin will capture the camera just fine.

Instead of starched ties and scratchy tights, consider something comfortable and casual.
