babywearing basics (plus, my favorite/least favorite carriers)

If you were to see me in real life – at church or running errands or at the park – this is what you would probably see:

A curly-haired woman with green-hazel-blue-gray-always-changing-colors eyes – holding a preschooler’s hand and carrying a toddler on her hip or in a carrier. Smiling at you (I smile a lot).

baby wearing a baby babywearing basics (plus, my favorite/least favorite carriers)I’m a big fan of babywearing or babycarrying or whatever you want to call it. Aside from all of the research-proven benefits, I like the closeness and security that baby carriers provide. I like the way my baby feels comforted and calm in my arms (People always say, “She’s such a happy baby!” and “Does she ever cry?” and things like that). I like the way that she is right at my eye level so that we can look at each other (and she can look at the world around her too). I like being able to grocery shop and cook and fold laundry, with her observing and content.

To date, here are the carriers I have tried or owned:

babybjorn spirit red heat babywearing basics (plus, my favorite/least favorite carriers) babyhawk mei tai tweet babywearing basics (plus, my favorite/least favorite carriers) boba organic baby carrier cedar babywearing basics (plus, my favorite/least favorite carriers) chicco smart support backpack red babywearing basics (plus, my favorite/least favorite carriers) ergo baby carrier dark chocolate babywearing basics (plus, my favorite/least favorite carriers) kelty fc 3.0 curry babywearing basics (plus, my favorite/least favorite carriers) kokopax classic carrier garden babywearing basics (plus, my favorite/least favorite carriers) maya wrap adjustable pouch black babywearing basics (plus, my favorite/least favorite carriers) munchkin jelly bean reversible sling licorice blossom babywearing basics (plus, my favorite/least favorite carriers) portamee baby carrier babywearing basics (plus, my favorite/least favorite carriers) scootababy baby carrier black babywearing basics (plus, my favorite/least favorite carriers)sleepy wrap classic baby carrier orange babywearing basics (plus, my favorite/least favorite carriers) evenflo snugli babywearing basics (plus, my favorite/least favorite carriers)

My absolute favorite, hands-down, no-question is the ERGO. It’s comfortable, soft, supportive, and has an awesome sun/sleep hood that I use frequently. It also has a pocket that allows me to slip in my debit card or a little cash if I’m out and about. I’ve hiked with my 16-month-old baby for 6+ miles in it (with no back or hip pain).

When my baby was itty bitty, I loved the BabyHawk (and it’s so pretty too!) and the Kelty FC 3.0 is totally awesome for serious family hikers (3+ miles).

My 2 least favorite ones would have to be (in order): Maya Wrap Adjustable Pouch (the company no longer sells them – for good reason!) and the Evenflo Snugli (not comfy).

Surprisingly, I’ve never used a ring sling…but I have my eye on Sakura Bloom for baby #3 (when that time eventually comes).

Do you wear your baby? Which carriers have you tried (and which one is your favorite)? Do you have any questions for me about the baby carriers I have listed?

Summer Fashion: The End

Big Secret: Tim has been gone in Ukraine for the past 2 weeks – and he’s coming home tonight (TONIGHT!)! I didn’t mention anything on my blog because I didn’t really want to advertise his absence, but oh-how-I’ve-missed-him.

in the mirror yellow tank Summer Fashion: The EndIn fact, this is the longest we’ve been apart from each other since I was 17. My heart could hardly stand it. I missed his voice, his smile, his wisdom, his friendship. And – I’m not gonna lie – I missed his help (What a glorious sound the garage door opening is at the end of the day, am I right?).

I planned the fashion series in part because reviews are generally pretty easy to write; it’s undemanding work. The other part is that I really like hosting giveaways. It makes my day to be able to e-mail winners and say, “You won!” (I have to admit, though, that I sometimes wish that I could always pick a regular reader/commenter instead of all of the sweepstakes people that come over…but I gotta keep things fair).

Even so, the odds are pretty good so I hope you’ll keep entering. And just to show that you can indeed win, tell me in the comments if you’ve won anything here in the past and, if so, what it was. To give hope to the masses.

keen paulina mary jane sandals Summer Fashion: The EndAlso – I mentioned what my tinies have been wearing on their feet, but I don’t want to close out the series without mentioning my new Paulina Mary Jane sandals, compliments of KEEN (pictured: right). They are super comfortable & breathable (AND made of real leather – no stinky feet!) – equally perfect for wearing with shorts or a skirt. I particularly like that they’re not completely flat (I’m not a fan of flats) so they actually offer support when I’m walking.

Here are three ways you can interact w/ the KEEN brand:

  1. If you’re looking for high-quality sandals, water shoes, or hiking boots, do check out their collection.
  2. If you want to win KEEN shoes and an Open Diving Adventure in Hawaii for you & a friend, do that before July 31st.
  3. If you would like to keep up with the KEEN brand, you can Like KEEN on Facebook or Follow KEEN on Twitter.

I hope you enjoyed perusing my fashion finds (I also hope that it is obvious that I am super picky and put great care into what I feature here).

Now it’s back to personal posts and musings. Yay.

Do you like it when I have periodic themed giveaway events here?

Summer Fashion: Petunia Pickle Bottom

wearing glasses and boxy backpack Summer Fashion: Petunia Pickle BottomRaise your hand if you want a Winnie-the-Pooh diaper bag. No? How about a bag with soccer balls and baseball bats on it? Elmo? Dora? Bright pink daisies? No?

Me neither.

Couture moms-to-be want a bag that doesn’t scream “dirty diapers inside here.” They want a bag that is upscale, chic, elegant…a bag like the ones offered by Petunia Pickle Bottom.

The Ventura, CA company offers backpacks, shoulder bags, totes, satchels, and clutches with refined details and a sophisticated edge.

rhone blooms boxy backpack Summer Fashion: Petunia Pickle BottomI recently had an opportunity to review the Boxy Backpack in Rhone Blooms. The exterior is stunning and sensible. It wipes clean easily…and also features a built-in changing pad, a detachable dirty diaper pouch, and plenty of pockets. It reminds me of something you might see in a cafe in Europe – worn by a vogue mama wearing a flowery dress w/ a gorgeous, rosy-cheeked baby on her hip.

The only downside that I can possibly see is that it’s a little wide in berth (see right). Oh, and then there’s the price (gulp).

Other than that, though, it’s perfectly lovely and functional at the same time.

Summer Fashion: Bravado! Designs

im logo Summer Fashion: Bravado! DesignsRecently overheard on Facebook: “I still haven’t found a nursing bra that I really like.”

Of course, I chimed in and said, “Have you tried Bravado?

LMB Black 170x200 127x150 Summer Fashion: Bravado! DesignsBravado! Designs was started by two moms in 1992…and they definitely “get” what nursing moms want – simplicity, comfort, support, and style.

I’ve had the Lifestyle Microfiber Bra ($39; $25 in hot pink) for over a year now and it is definitely one of the very first bras that I pull from my closet…when it’s clean, that is! (I’m constantly washing and wearing it!).

Sublime Cherry 170x200 127x150 Summer Fashion: Bravado! DesignsNow, I have another new favorite: the Sublime Nursing Bra in Black Cherry ($49). It’s super pretty, sublimely stretchy, and wonderfully supportive – without pinching or poking (I can’t stand underwire, by the way…so I appreciate that this bra offers “lift without lead”).

Need a few other reasons to love Bravado? The company is committed to green business practices and is diligent about giving back to the community. Plus, they’re running a Summer Pampering Sweepstakes right now, giving away a total of $600 worth of prizes (enter before July 24!).

P.S. If you would like to stay connected with BD, I suggest that you: Follow Bravado! Designs on Twitter.

Father’s Day Gift Guide: ZÜCA Pro

zuca 300x246 Fathers Day Gift Guide: ZÜCA ProEvery since this bag arrived, I can’t help but say, “ZÜCA, ZÜCA, ZÜCA” all around the house. Try it. It’s a fun word to say.

Even more fun? Traveling ’round the country or the globe with this innovative, ingenious carry-on.

Here are my top 3 reasons why the ZÜCA Pro rocks (in no particular order):

  1. It’s super lightweight and easy to wheel (and it has a longer handle so you don’t have to stoop as you pull).
  2. It comes with 5 packing cubes (plus, a TSA-approved toiletry bag)! They’re mesh bags with zippers that allow you to color-coordinate and organize your luggage. You won’t have to dump out the contents of your entire bag to try to find your underwear/t-shirt/hairbrush. Everything is accessible in seconds.
  3. It doubles as a seat (and it’s actually pretty comfortable). You won’t have to sit in airport seats and keep an eye on your bag. Instead, just sit right on top of it and relax with your phone or laptop. Or you can people-watch (always a favorite).

All this talk really can’t do the bag justice – go watch this ZÜCA Pro in Action video for a full overview. Really. Go see the brilliance for yourself.

We haven’t had this bag for long, but so far we give this bag an enthusiastic two thumbs up for inventiveness and awesomeness. It’s sturdy, superbly designed, and sure to make traveling easier for the guy in your life (I have to tell you, though…this bag is perfect for moms too).

Father’s Day Gift Guide: Skillet by Lodge Cast Iron Cookware

Our Dinner Tonight:

dinner in june Fathers Day Gift Guide: Skillet by Lodge Cast Iron Cookware

NY Steak. Corn on the Cob. Potatoes, Mushrooms, & Green Beans in the Skillet. French Bread with Butter. Oh, and A&W Root Beer.

After dinner, we went on a walk and came home to homemade peach crisp with vanilla bean ice cream. Now the girls are tucked in bed and we *may* watch “Food, Inc.” I checked it out at the library (have you seen it?).

cast iron skillet with glass cover Fathers Day Gift Guide: Skillet by Lodge Cast Iron CookwareWe cooked the vegetable dish in a cast iron skillet ($22.95-$64.95) made by Lodge Cast Iron Cookware. It’s a pre-seasoned, heavy-duty pan that is great for use on the stove-top, on the grill, or over an open fire. We’ve only used it at home so far, but I imagine it will come along with us on many camping adventures in the coming years. Hey – it may even go on camping adventures with our kids and THEIR kids someday. I’ve heard that cast iron lasts forever…

All in all, this is an excellent Father’s Day gift pick for any dad who enjoys cooking – indoors or out.

Father’s Day Gift Guide: Mizuno running shoes or Teva hiking boots

A good pair of shoes is a good gift for anyone (for almost any occasion).

Father’s Day is no exception. Unlike a tie or a Dad-themed t-shirt, he’ll wear a new pair of shoes…often and gladly.

New shoes – especially fitness shoes – are a great investment for his wardrobe…and his health.

Wave Ascend 4men Fathers Day Gift Guide: Mizuno running shoes or Teva hiking bootsFor the Runner: Consider Mizuno’s Wave Ascend 4 ($89.99).

These black and silver running-shoes trimmed with bright orange are sure to be noticed on the track or around the neighborhood. They’re slick and stylish and scream athleticism. More importantly than the “looks,” however, these shoes deliver the goods in terms of comfort and support. They’ll offer him excellent cushioning for cruising in races – against his peers or against himself. Tim says they have a super secure grip and they’re great for running across rocky terrain.

reva leather mid event boot Fathers Day Gift Guide: Mizuno running shoes or Teva hiking bootsFor the Hiker: Consider Teva’s Reva Leather Mid eVent Boot ($150).

Both rugged and sophisticated, these boots are the ultimate gift choice for any man who appreciates the outdoors. Tim immediately noticed that they’re exceptionally lightweight (like wearing a tennis shoe!) and offer superior breathability, without losing sturdiness or letting in water. He’ll use these in the heat of the summer, through the fall, and into the first snows of winter. Side Note: Tim says they run a bit small so you may want to consider ordering a half-size up.

* Mizuno and Teva sent product samples for review purposes.
