babywearing basics (plus, my favorite/least favorite carriers)

If you were to see me in real life – at church or running errands or at the park – this is what you would probably see:

A curly-haired woman with green-hazel-blue-gray-always-changing-colors eyes – holding a preschooler’s hand and carrying a toddler on her hip or in a carrier. Smiling at you (I smile a lot).

baby wearing a baby babywearing basics (plus, my favorite/least favorite carriers)I’m a big fan of babywearing or babycarrying or whatever you want to call it. Aside from all of the research-proven benefits, I like the closeness and security that baby carriers provide. I like the way my baby feels comforted and calm in my arms (People always say, “She’s such a happy baby!” and “Does she ever cry?” and things like that). I like the way that she is right at my eye level so that we can look at each other (and she can look at the world around her too). I like being able to grocery shop and cook and fold laundry, with her observing and content.

To date, here are the carriers I have tried or owned:

babybjorn spirit red heat babywearing basics (plus, my favorite/least favorite carriers) babyhawk mei tai tweet babywearing basics (plus, my favorite/least favorite carriers) boba organic baby carrier cedar babywearing basics (plus, my favorite/least favorite carriers) chicco smart support backpack red babywearing basics (plus, my favorite/least favorite carriers) ergo baby carrier dark chocolate babywearing basics (plus, my favorite/least favorite carriers) kelty fc 3.0 curry babywearing basics (plus, my favorite/least favorite carriers) kokopax classic carrier garden babywearing basics (plus, my favorite/least favorite carriers) maya wrap adjustable pouch black babywearing basics (plus, my favorite/least favorite carriers) munchkin jelly bean reversible sling licorice blossom babywearing basics (plus, my favorite/least favorite carriers) portamee baby carrier babywearing basics (plus, my favorite/least favorite carriers) scootababy baby carrier black babywearing basics (plus, my favorite/least favorite carriers)sleepy wrap classic baby carrier orange babywearing basics (plus, my favorite/least favorite carriers) evenflo snugli babywearing basics (plus, my favorite/least favorite carriers)

My absolute favorite, hands-down, no-question is the ERGO. It’s comfortable, soft, supportive, and has an awesome sun/sleep hood that I use frequently. It also has a pocket that allows me to slip in my debit card or a little cash if I’m out and about. I’ve hiked with my 16-month-old baby for 6+ miles in it (with no back or hip pain).

When my baby was itty bitty, I loved the BabyHawk (and it’s so pretty too!) and the Kelty FC 3.0 is totally awesome for serious family hikers (3+ miles).

My 2 least favorite ones would have to be (in order): Maya Wrap Adjustable Pouch (the company no longer sells them – for good reason!) and the Evenflo Snugli (not comfy).

Surprisingly, I’ve never used a ring sling…but I have my eye on Sakura Bloom for baby #3 (when that time eventually comes).

Do you wear your baby? Which carriers have you tried (and which one is your favorite)? Do you have any questions for me about the baby carriers I have listed?

SLY Awards: Moby Wrap

thumb moby logo small SLY Awards: Moby WrapWhenever the subject of favorite baby carriers comes up, someone inevitably mentions Moby Wraps. Several of my friends have owned one and they say all good things. And I have to admit that whenever I see a baby snuggled in one of these, I can’t help but think how cozy they look – so loved, so peaceful.

SLY Award recipient Kristen McGee is an active babywearer and I know she’ll love having her newborn baby girl snuggled up close to her heart come May in a soft, stretchy, highly-acclaimed wrap by Moby. She’s the kind of mom who loves her kids with a love that comes from the deepest part of her soul.

Moby Wrap offers wraps in pastels, brights, patterns, and darks. They offer organic wraps, silk wraps, wraps with UV protection, and wraps with beautiful batik designs (inspired by Indonesia).

Here are a few of my favorites [click on each image to see more details]:

If you are intimidated by wraps, you’ll be happy to know that Moby Wraps offers super helpful step-by-step visual guides and videos to show you how to get your baby into a variety of positions in the wrap. There are even tips for nursing in your moby or getting a workout while carrying your baby! Sweet.

Other things about the Moby that you should know:

  • You can wear your baby facing you, facing the world, sideways, or on your back.
  • Moby wraps are appropriate for preemies all the way up to 35 pounds.
  • Moby Wraps are machine-washable.

All in all, the Moby Wrap appears to be exceptionally versatile with high ratings from moms when it comes to comfort and style.

Go-Go-Gadget

InspectorGadget 231x300 Go Go GadgetRemember that old show? With Penny, Brain (Penny’s dog), and Dr. Claw’s metal arm with the clenched fist.

Well, there are countless baby gadgets that abound on the market. They may not be as cool as Inspector Gadget’s devices (I could totally use an extra pair of go-go-gadget hands popping out of my hat sometimes, for example…), but there are some pretty remarkable inventions out there.

Check out these two products…both created with active parents in mind.

ergobaby carrier 6 month old baby Go Go GadgetERGObaby carrier ($105-$120)

I’ve read all over the Internet (and from friends) that ERGObaby carriers are the very best. I’ve tried a lot of carriers over the past three years (Sleepy Wrap, BabyHawk, BabyBjorn, Scootababy, Munchkin, PortaMEe, etc.) so, when I received the ERGO, I was curious if it would live up to all the fanfare.

It did.

The straps are comfortable. The material is soft. The waist belt lends extra support. The carrier is easy to get on and off without the help of a spouse or friend (this is a HUGE bonus). And the whole carrier is machine-washable too.

The one “downside” is that this carrier is meant for babies who are 6 months and older (I only recently started using mine). That said, there is a corresponding infant insert that you can buy for $25-$38. Or you may choose to wear a wrap, sling, or pouch in the beginning.

baby in ergo carrier 6 months old Go Go GadgetThe upside, however, is that the carrier can be used on the front, hip, and back – all the way until your child is 40 pounds (and, after 40 pounds, I assume you won’t want to be carrying your child around in a carrier much). This really is a truly versatile carrier and, if you buy the infant insert, it could be your only carrier. If you’re going to buy just one carrier, this is probably your best bet.

Pictured right: me wearing the Organic Dark Chocolate carrier ($120, isn’t that color just the best?).

Pictured left: the sweetest baby ever peeking out from her perch in the ERGO.

babybjorn travel crib 6 month old baby Go Go GadgetBabyBjorn Travel Crib Light ($220-$300, depending on where you buy)

When we first got the BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light for review, I asked my husband to set it up. He’s the baby-gear-setter-upper around these parts. I expected it might take a little while because baby gear manuals are notoriously unintelligent and contradictory.

This time, however, I walked out of the room. And one second later (okay, maybe it was a minute…), my husband said, “It’s ready.” And it was. Completely set up and ready to go. Easy as pie.

Screen shot 2009 09 13 at 11.42.09 PM 150x106 Go Go GadgetI also discovered that the crib is super lightweight. You can pick it up and move it about without using much muscle at all. Plus, the frame is designed to fit well in small spaces (a definite plus!). I also am a fan of the simple royal blue and white color schematic. Very classy.

The mattress is a bit on the thin side (a little extra padding certainly couldn’t hurt) and bedding isn’t included with the purchase (a fitted sheet or two would have been nice), but – overall – this is a fantastic crib…for at home or for travel. We’re not really the “crib type,” but we do have our baby sleep in it for naps from time-to-time. I think it’s much better than the traditional pack-n-play options out there. The simplicity of it makes it the leader of the pack. Oh, and I should mention that it currently has 5 stars on Amazon (from 75 reviewers).

YOUR TURN: What baby gadgets have you been impressed by lately? Which baby carrier is your favorite?

3 Baby Carriers; 3 Photos

“Is she asleep?” I ask my husband, pivoting my body slightly so that he can see our month old daughter’s eyes.

Her eyes are 75% shot…okay, they’re shut,” he says.

I’m going to *try* to set her down in the bassinet so that I can go to the bathroom, brush my teeth, put away a little laundry, and get something to eat…I’m starving,” I say.

I try to place her down gently. She squirms a little; then her body relaxes. I sigh with relief and book it to the bathroom. Then, I brush my teeth and fold laundry and check my e-mail – all at the same time! With two hands free, I can change the world! Or at least get a few things checked off my to-do list…

——————————————————————————————————————————

There’s nothin’ like having your hands-free when you’re a mama.

ibw xlarge 3 Baby Carriers; 3 PhotosBut babies don’t always like to sit in bouncy seats, cribs, and bassinets…and who can blame them when the alternative is to be snuggled up in mama’s arms? My 1-month-old will sometimes sleep or sit in “something,” but usually she’ll sleep longer and/or be more content when she is awake if I’m carrying her – which is why I consider a baby carrier a newborn necessity. Baby carriers allow me to carry her AND have my hands-free – imagine that!

There are a lot of different styles of baby carriers – wraps, pouches, slings, mei tais, front carriers, back carriers, hip carriers, etc. I have a pretty extensive carrier collection (including several homemade slings, the Maya Wrap, the Scootababy, the Munchkin Jelly Bean Reversible Sling, the PortaMEe, etc.), but I recently had an opportunity to try three new ones so I thought I’d share my reviews with you in case you’re in the market for one.

sleepy wrap 2 3 Baby Carriers; 3 PhotosSleepy Wrap – I understand why this carrier is called Sleepy Wrap. The material is so wonderfully soft and perfectly stretchy that I don’t blame babies for wanting to snuggle right up and close their eyes. And the baby isn’t the only one who will be comfortable in this wrap! Mamas will appreciate that the baby’s weight is evenly distributed across both shoulders and the whole back. Available in 14 different vibrant colors, the carrier is reasonably priced at $38.95 and is easily machine-washable.

Wraps can be a little intimidating at first because of all of the “wrapping” they involve, but – once you get the hang of it – you’ll likely love it. The Sleepy Wrap is an ideal carrier for newborns because it keeps them cuddled up close and they won’t be “jostled” around as you move about…perfect if you have older children to keep up with throughout the day!

babyhawk mei tai 1 3 Baby Carriers; 3 PhotosBabyHawk Mei Tai – BabyHawk Mei Tais are oh-so-stylish. The designs are plentiful and unique and absolutely gorgeous. They are also exceptionally easy to put on and comfortable too! The BabyHawk is suitable for newborns up to babies who weigh under 35 pounds. The baby can be worn on the front, hip, or back so it is truly versatile. I have the Tweet design and it makes me want to chirp with delight. I always get compliments on the peaceful color scheme and modern illustrations. Retailing between $80-95, BabyHawks are on the pricey side, but they also “last” for a long time.

if you decide to purchase a BabyHawk, consider buying through Parenting By Nature, a family-owned Canadian company that seeks to help parents “experience the joys of babywearing, cloth diapering, and breastfeeding.” You’ll appreciate fine customer service, free shipping, and the satisfaction of knowing that you’re helping a mom be able to stay at home with her two little girls.

babybjorn spirit 1 3 Baby Carriers; 3 PhotosBabyBjorn Spirit – Just in time for spring and summer, BabyBjorn has debuted a new line of their Original carrier in 8 bright, vivacious colors. This front carrier is machine-washable and can be used for 8-25 pound babies. BabyBjorn is a trusted brand for baby gear (have you tried their potty chairs?) and they know what their doing. The Spirit carriers typically retail for approximately $79.99 and can be found at almost every baby specialty store, plus at Target and on Amazon.com.

For a more extensive “comparison” of the various forms of carriers (including the pros and cons of each),check out How to Choose a Baby Carrier {via Parenting By Nature}.

YOUR TURN: What carrier(s) have you tried? Which “style” is your favorite?

WIN IT! There will be two winners. One winner will receive a Sleepy Wrap {in the color of his/her choice}. A second winner will receive a BabyHawk Mei Tai {in the design of his/her choice…from available options at Parenting By Nature}. To enter, leave any topic-related comment (and also indicate which carrier you would prefer) prior to Thursday, April 30 at midnight (Don’t forget to follow the rules…all generic comments like “Enter me!,” “Love it,” and “Cool stuff!” will be disqualified.).

NOTE: The Sleepy Wrap contest is open to U.S. residents only. The BabyHawk Mei Tai contest is open to both U.S. AND Canadian readers.

*UPDATE* The winners are #35 SHEVAUN (Sleepy Wrap) and #12 Jenny N. (BabyHawk Mei Tai). Congratulations!

Now, there’s another solution – the CPR Anytime Personal Learning Program (created by the American Heart Association). Learn CPR in the comfort of your own home by entering to win one of five DVD sets over at 5 Minutes for Mom. Deadline: Oct. 10.

I’d give up a lot of baby gear before giving up…

My Baby Carriers!

Slings, Pouches, Wraps, Mai Tais, Front Carriers, Hip Carriers, Back Carriers. There are so many different names and styles, but all of them are designed with the same thing in mind: keeping baby nearby and close to mama’s heart, while allowing mama to have her hands-free.

I wore my daughter all of the time up until about 11 months – she loved to be snuggled close and I loved the freedom and ease of having my hands-free, while still being able to pick up on her hunger cues and needs. We were inseparable that first year.

Of course, we also had one of those carry-along infant car seats, but those are over-rated in my opinion. They’re bulky and heavy and “impersonal.” Sure, it did come in handy, but more-often-than-not I opted to slide my Little Beauty into a carrier rather than bruise up my knees from the cumbersome seat. Besides, I think my daughter much preferred the warmth and closeness of the carrier. Babywearing made both of us happy.

41 jbreversiblesling lg Id give up a lot of baby gear before giving up...A PR agency recently sent me the Jelly Bean Reversible Sling by Munchkin. Here’s the description from the Munchkin website: “You can wear the sling in 5 different positions and there are no buckles or rings to attach. There are built-in pockets on both sides to hold your essentials. And the special sling design makes it easy and discreet to breastfeed baby.”

I never tried the breastfeeding-in-carrier thing with my daughter (I think I was overwhelmed by being a first time mama), but I plan to give it a shot when we get pregnant with and have baby #2. It seems like a great option for discreet feeding in public.

I tried on the Jelly Bean Reversible Sling when it arrived with my 20-pound toddler in it and it was comfortable (the sling is designed for newborns up to 35 lbs). The material was nice and had a decent amount of stretch. I also liked the ease factor – no rings, snaps, or buttons to contend with. Although I won’t be using this sling with my daughter (even though she’s well under the 35-pound limit, she’s way past the sling stage. She’s running and climbing and extremely independent), I do anticipate using it quite a bit when #2 eventually comes along.

Retailing between $30 and $35, this sling is significantly more affordable than many others on-the-market and is definitely worth looking into.

YOUR TURN:

  1. Did you/do you/will you “wear” your baby?
  2. What baby carrier is/was your favorite?
  3. Did you ever “master” breastfeeding in your baby carrier and, if so, what tips do you have for other mamas and mamas-to-be?

The winner will be announced and contacted on Monday, May 12. * Winner must provide a U.S. mailing address.
