Children’s Books: 5 [Little-Known] Favorites

A good children’s book is surprisingly hard to find.

Perhaps I am a hard critic, but I must say that I am largely underwhelmed by the majority of the books that we check out from the library. They tend to be unimaginative, embarrassingly trite, lacking in depth and character development, and crudely illustrated.

On the flip side, there are some children’s books that far surpass adult books in beauty and original writing. For your reading pleasure, here are 5 of our favorite picture books that are not particularly well-known:

Mr. Hatch works at the shoelace factory and lives an uninspired, ho-hum life…until he receives an anonymous note in the mail that turns his life upside-down. A lovely story about the power of human kindness.

The Town of Drabsville USA is dreary, boring, and grey…until a passionate and energetic monkey shows up and colors the world. It gloriously illustrates the power that one individual can have to transform an entire community.

mufaros beautiful daughters Childrens Books: 5 [Little Known] FavoritesMufaro’s Beautiful Daughters by John Steptoe

Two beautiful daughters – one with a cold heart, one with a kind heart. A noble and handsome prince must choose a wife. Will love win out? [The answer is: Yes.]

what charlie heard Childrens Books: 5 [Little Known] FavoritesWhat Charlie Heard by Mordecai Gerstein

Author Mordecai Gerstein brilliantly writes the biography of American Composer Charles Ives in a way that appeals to both young and old. His use of the pen is pure music and the illustrations are wondrous. P.S. If you have a chance to get this one as an audio book, DO IT. Hearing Mordecai read his work aloud is an auditory delight.

MarthaDoesntSaySorry Childrens Books: 5 [Little Known] FavoritesMartha Doesn’t Say Sorry by Samantha Berger

Martha the Otter is occasionally naughty and, unfortunately, she is not very good at apologizing. In the end, however, she does learn the benefits of saying sorry. Clever illustrations. Fun to read aloud.

BEST OF 2009: Kid Products

little girl with her bike BEST OF 2009: Kid ProductsIt’s weird. For the longest time, my firstborn was my BABY. Then, she was a toddler. But now…now she is a full-fledged kid. She rides bikes and chews gum and picks out her own clothes. She is a beautiful, bright little girl with a heart of gold – so different from the tiny baby that was placed in my arms 3 years ago, yet I know her through-and-through just the same.

I reviewed my fair share of kid-related products this past year and quite a few of them were really wonderful, but I narrowed down my picks to three OUTSTANDING, AMAZING, YOU-WON’T-REGRET-BUYING-THEM products.

Here goes…

logo BEST OF 2009: Kid Productsthe Nora Boot by Eleven Collection

Soft. Sturdy. Stylish. Sweet. All of those words perfectly describe the Nora Boot by Eleven Collection. Our 3-year-old has been wearing them all over the place this winter – around our neighborhood, at Disneyland, the park, the grocery store, etc. She always gets compliments on them because they are fabulously fashionable, but they must be ultra-comfy too because she always picks them over her tennis shoes and sandals. Because they provide extra coverage, they’re ideal for hiking and splashing through puddles…but they’re equally well-suited for city girls.

nora4 150x150 BEST OF 2009: Kid ProductsOn sale for $45, the price is a little steep, but it’s actually a small price to pay for something your child wears every single day…on their feet. My preschooler uses her feet A LOT for running and jumping and hopping and spinning and bike pedaling…so good shoes are important. That’s the way I see it.

Eleven Collection is a Portland-based company that specializes in shoes for 3-8 year olds. They retail for between $30-58.

tealogotag3 BEST OF 2009: Kid ProductsClothing from Tea Collection

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: If I could dress my girls in only Tea, I would. Tea Collection offers beautiful, global-inspired, modern pieces that are both playful and sophisticated.

My 3-year-old isn’t much into frills and lace and zippers and buttons. She likes easy, no-nonsense pieces – preferably with elastic waists and no buttons. I don’t blame her a bit.

972014 Birch 150x150 BEST OF 2009: Kid ProductsThat said, I DO like her to be cute and put-together too. Tea Collection solves my conundrum because the clothes are gorgeous and outstanding, but they’re also soft and super simple. Go check out the pieces for yourself. You’re bound to fall in love.

These designer kids clothes are highly durable and undeniably unique. Don’t forget to peruse the Sale section for the latest bargains. I’m just a-waiting for the day they have a big 75% off blow-out sale and I’m going to go in and scoop up a new wardrobe for my girls.

9780689718724 BEST OF 2009: Kid Products“Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch” by Eileen Spinelli

I’m kind of a children’s book nut…meaning I totally love them as much as my girls do. I get SO EXCITED when an illustrated book arrives in the mail.

Every once in awhile one arrives that stops me in my tracks. “Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch” (published by Simon & Schuster) is like that. The illustrations are lovely and captivating. The story is mesmerizing and emotional. The message is heartwarming – and I often end up a little teary-eyed when I read the triumphant last page.

I certainly don’t want to “spoil” the joy for you, but – in a nutshell – the book chronicles the life of a lonely old spinster whose life is completely revolutionized when he receives a special gift in the mail. I sort of get goosebumps just writing this because the story is awesome. Your child’s bookshelf wants a copy.

3 Inspiring Books

If you know me well, you know that I can often be found with my nose in a book. Reading allows me to learn new things, to be introduced to new ideas and concepts.

I like all kinds of books, but the books that I enjoy reading most of all tend to be the ones that ignite a passion in my soul and inspire action.

The following three books definitely fall into that category:

9780689718724 130x150 3 Inspiring BooksSomebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch written by Eileen Spinelli, illustrated by Paul Yalowitz (Aladdin Paperbacks, 1996)

Mr. Hatch is a balding older gentleman who works a ho-hum job at the shoelace factory. He is lonely and tired and he doesn’t smile. Then, one day, Mr. Hatch receives something in the mail – a giant heart-shaped box filled with chocolates. Attached is an anonymous message: “Somebody loves you.”

That message revolutionizes Mr. Hatch’s way of life. He dresses differently. He spends his time differently. He sees people differently. Because he is loved.

I hate to be all sappy, but I have to say: I almost cry when I read the final page of this children’s book every.single.time that I read it. The story is priceless. The illustrations are endearing. The message is inspiring. It is sure to be loved by you and your kids. A great read aloud story for all ages to enjoy together.

5book360 1 150x150 3 Inspiring BooksFIVE: Where will you be five years from today? written by Dan Zadra (Compendium Incorporated, 2009)

I have a special notebook that I carry around with me everywhere – all throughout the day. I write down my hopes, my goals, my dreams, my ideas, my ambitions. I have short-term goals and long-term goals and “impossible” goals. I have goals for today, for tomorrow, for next week, for five – ten – 20 years from now.

A few times throughout the year, my husband and I try to schedule separate days to spend alone, pray, write down our goals, reflect (preferably in nature somewhere). Then, we come back together to discuss where we are currently in life, where we want to be, WHO we want to be.

This book is PERFECT for those meditative times. If you’re looking for a book to take along with you on a retreat or to read in a quiet moment when the house is asleep, this could be it. Packed with quotes, exercises, inspiration, and white space – you’ll have plenty of room to doodle, draft, and draw your way to a fuller, richer life.

This is not a typical “read from cover-to-cover and then put on a bookshelf” book. This is a journaling book, a book to engage with and to come back to. It’s an excellent pick for days/times when you get a little “alone time” to be contemplative.

9781590304716 121x150 3 Inspiring BooksThe Creative Family: How to Encourage Imagination and Nurture Family Connections written by Amanda Blake Soule, illustrated by Betsy Thompson (Trumpeter, 2008)

Written by a BLOGGER {SouleMama} and mom of three, this book’s subtitle is “simple projects and activities for you and your children.” That description is highly accurate. The book covers arts & crafts, sewing, photography, family traditions, teaching gratitude, and much more. It’s all about doing simple things to add beauty and imagination to our homes.

I came away with quite a few thoughts and ideas that I would like to try with my family: expressing daily gratitudes, hanging a bulletin board, creating an inspiration folder, using high-quality art supplies, etc.

I have to admit that I’m not quite as “crafty” as SouleMama so some of her projects are not really in my radar. That said, I DO appreciate beautiful things and I DO strive to live simply. Soule’s book gave me ideas in both of those categories…and, for that, I am truly grateful. Overall, it’s a beautiful book full of ingenuity and heavenly handmade creations. (Pssst…Madeline…this book reminds me of you).
