Utrecht, The Netherlands: University Town, Rich with History

Utrecht, The Netherlands: University Town, Rich with History 1

When we first researched our 12-night European cruise and saw The Netherlands on the itinerary, I envisioned us going to Amsterdam. As it turned out, however, Amsterdam was 90 minutes from Rotterdam, our port city. After having several friends recommend that we try a smaller town rather than the hustle-and-bustle of Amsterdam, we considered visiting The Hague (30min from Rotterdam), Haarlem (60min from Rotterdam), and Utrecht (60min from Rotterdam).

Our final choice? Utrecht, a college town (home to Utrecht University) that offers rich history along with lovely buildings, alleys, canals, and waterways.

We quickly learned that Hollanders love their bikes and are very serious about them. Bicyclists come flying around every corner and they clearly have the right of way. Our taxi driver explained to us that only the wealthy have cars. Most people get around comfortably on bikes or on foot.

We were pleasantly surprised that Utrecht is a less touristy destination. You'll notice more locals and fewer travelers.

Getting from Rotterdam to Utrecht

Because we were with friends, we ended up taking a taxi from Rotterdam to Utrecht, which was a rather miserable, stop-and-go experience. On the way back, however, we took the train and then walked from the Rotterdam train station to the cruise ship - a far better means of transportation (and far less expensive to boot!). The train was peaceful, safe, and far less bumpy than the erratic taxi alternative. Don't be intimidated by public transport in Europe! It's easy and breezy to use.

Things to Do in Utrecht

1. The most interesting thing that we did in Utrecht was to take a guided tour of Dom Under, which are ruins beneath the city from "when Romans ruled the world." Absolutely fascinating if you are fond of history.

2. Domkerk church, which is right next door to Dom Under, is pretty and worth a visit. Admission is free.

3. We also thoroughly enjoyed our visit to "the most exciting train station in The Netherlands" - The Railway Museum. Frequented by locals, you won't find many tourists at this impressively large train museum. Not only will you see dozens of trains of various types (dining, sleeper, transport, historic, etc), but you can also go on two rides (Trial By Fire and Steel Monsters - so much fun!) and see a show (Dream Journeys). Although the show is in Dutch, it is still worth seeing to soak in the language and culture.

4. Wander around Utrecht University's gothic campus and hidden courtyard garden.

5. Stop in for coffee or lunch at Ann & Max Hotel. Not sure what to order? Try the SuperClub - It's delightful and has wonderful bread. Our waiter first spoke to us in Dutch and then transitioned seamlessly and impressively into English.

ON OUR NEXT TRIP TO THE NETHERLANDS

On our next trip to The Netherlands, we'd love to venture into Amsterdam to marvel at magnificent artwork at Rembrandt House Museum and Van Gogh Museum, step back into history at Rembrandt's Amsterdam Experience and the Anne Frank House, cycle through Vondelpark, rent a boat and sail peacefully along the canals, dine al fresco at Pulitzer or The Plantage, and attend a concert at Amstelveld Church. I'd also very much like to see the Corrie Ten Boom House in Haarlem!

FUN FACTS

  • Utrecht is the fourth largest city in The Netherlands. The three others are Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Den Haag.
  • Utrecht University is the largest university in The Netherlands.

BOOK A CRUISE

Our family went on a 12-night European Capitals Cruise in late May aboard the Caribbean Princess with Princess Cruise Line and Rotterdam, The Netherlands was our second stop.

Princess Cruise Line is offering another European Capitals Cruise in May 2025 and Rotterdam is on the itinerary. We recommend this cruise itinerary - 100%!
